Junk Mail Used To Smuggle Prison Drugs

June 24, 2009
Queensland prison authorities say they are being forced to employ more creative methods to detect jailhouse drug smugglers after it was revealed prisoners were trying to sneak in drugs glued to junk mail.
Corrective Services officers working at the Woodford Correctional Centre, west of Brisbane, intercepted a letter containing a brochure on Monday. A search revealed a clip seal bag containing buprenorphine glued inside.
Police from the Corrective Services Investigation Unit will now attempt to trace the source of the letter.
Buprenorphine is an opiate pain killer used to treat drug addiction.
"I think it's fair to say people are becoming quite creative in the way they are trying to get this stuff into (prisons) and we are having to become even more creative," a Corrective Services spokesman said.
Corrective Services Minister Neil Roberts applauded Monday's bust and warned anyone trying to get drugs into prison was running the gauntlet.
"We use a combination of intelligence, electronic security measures, drug dogs and electronic testing," he said.
