I did a course by a company called Genesis for single mams, on confidence building. Was good as a short term intervention - really motivated me at the time.
The disabillity advisor here think one of those confidence courses would be good for me but there's not been one I've been able to get to yet. It can be a bit of a problem out here in the sticks just to get to courses (when you have to rely on public transport). As such, the only one I've actually been on was a First Aid course which was kinda random but always handy to know a bit of and was local so no problem to get to. Problem was, the information was pretty bad and outdated. The hour we did at middle school was much better. I had to correct the woman teaching us on more than one occasion which didn't fill me with hope for her teaching abilities. Also, all that grubbing about on the floor putting and being put into recovery position and doing CPR on rubber fellas put my back out for days - could hardly walk - so not the greatest advert for First Aid.
Quailty of courses varies quite a bit depending on where you are, I presume. I've not really heard a good word about the ones that are arranged by the Job Centre but I am looking forward to the one arranged by my DSP which apparently combines gardening and counselling. Supposed to have a lot of positive feedback from people who did it last year and does sound like it should be good for me. Well, dunno about the gardening aspect as I can barely keep a pot plant alive but hopefully pick up a few tips. It's more the counselling aspect that interests me - motivation and confidence building for people with longterm addictions is apparently what this particular course is designed for.
One thing that I was pleasantly surprised to discover through the Job Centre (well, the disability advisor again) was that you can do college courses - part or full time - whilst on ESA without being disqualified as you are if you're on JSA. It's still kinda tricky to get transport to the colleges but would be doable if there was a course I was really interested in. I'm hoping to have moved before too long so am not looking too hard at it right now but once I've moved it's definitely something I'd be interested in. Gotta be better than sitting around all day and I always did enjoy college. Learning stuff is great
