Hell
hello, so to whoever is reading this, im kristof and im an unpublished songwriter and a poet. i have sold a lil bit of poetry but not in stores or anything like that, anyways im wondering if any1 has any information of a job for sum1 of my specific skills. Not really looking for sumthing with lots of integrity or anything too serious, i just need the money so i can afford to live, once i do that ill be taking care of my serious writings which ive already started but 4 now i need $. Figured sum of you may have had the same issue so thought id ask 4 sum info.

BTW i live in illinois, about an hour from chicago.

Thanx

Ah man, poetry doesn't feed your man anymore. Neither did it before.

^

*sigh.

your going to have to get out there, foot to ground and make it happen --
find the right places at the right times gravitate to the right people -- get ripped off probably, and do it again.

this is what i would expect.
and was my experience with DJing successfully, eventually.

self-publishing some, and handing out as much as possible with contact info, and trust would give you some credibility, feed-back, open doors, and help to build a name for your work.
or if you are confident enough, start contacting agents, publicists, in hopes of having an entry at least in a compilation book.

again, this is what i would prepare myself for...

i agree, and im looking for a place with a roomate already aligned we just want to pick based on where jobs are, once im there i can focus on my real good shit, for now id b satisfied with greeting and holiday cards but i cant imagine theres a shortage of those simple jobs, i dont have a car either so a work from home thing would b best but i dunno if theres anything like that. btw is self-publishing worth it, profit wise? and is Djing a publishing company?

i was comparing djing at raves, promoting and handing your stuff over, constant working-promoting-putting yourself there... same concept.worked for me:-)

hehe, ill say with taking it upon yourself to publish your self , id have a tight 3 game plans... ive met a few people who did this with a ' novel formate ', which were good short and sweet,, but paper is heavy... and each of these occurrences these were boxes in a closet.
a very sad sight,, self censorship, at least promote your self, and give! and smile, and keep your description simple enough.

;)

i have my own little ideas though, and there is a thread in education and careers forum with some "professionals" sharing. im still interested in this thread here though- heheh -just suggesting.

;-)

hmm interesting ur a dj? u still practice cuz i do music so... just a thought 4 when i get my place with my roommate, ive been thinkn bout gettin a dj, and ill take a look @ education n careers

hehe, no dj'd in this other past life...
but the hustle is the same id imagine, starting from scratch.

making it in music, at least enough to pay some bills would be far more easy, but-
is it worth it to live and try for passion?
& exist that way, by any means?

$>?

its the only way 2 live, and for me when im not in the place im in now it comes naturally, no trying about it

well it sure dont look like theres gonna b any responses, where all the writers at??? ill have 2 check out the education n carreers section

Yeh well, the truth hurts sometimes.

There was never any money in poetry so what are you expecting. [except from charitable donations. and rich people supporting the arts isnt in vogue anymore.

Poets have always have been wanderers, even rogues, its the nature of the game.

i mean why would people pay for something that is infinite and free? i always felt the purpose of art is to practically destroy the concept of money, anyway.

sure music easier. generate a few bobs, beeps and beats on a little machine so people can get drunk and rub against each other in a club, you'll make some cash. and even reaching that point is fucking hard.

actually control denied i can put that 2gether in a hour its easy im 10x beyond that in skill, but i refuse 2 degrade myself like that, anyway sum poets have had success altho i agree most havnt and they struggle n dont make much money. i think imma check out the black panther party to c if they need a writer, hopefully i can get paid, that would b an honorable job

Use youtube and other social media to create a following. Put your poetry up with some interesting visuals and make a youtube video. If the poems speak to people, or even if they're just sufficiently entertaining, they will eventually gain the attention they deserve.
Once you have a following you can convince publishers to work with you much more easily than otherwise.

i appreciate ur input, its actually crossed my mind, even those ipod casts or watever theyre called lol, but it takes time n i have no $ n i think i hav 2 declare bankruptcy, im in debt like 14 grand. yea, i got every intention of doing that i just need a not so important writing job till i get on my feet n can focus on my good stuff.

thanx 4 ur input

Journalism then?
Why limit yourself to just a writing job? Lots of great writers took hard jobs that seemed to have nothing to do with writing. It'd be good for you.
It's not like working as a sports reporter is going to hone your poetry skills any more than working as a landscaper would.

If we're talking creative writing here, then there's writing for TV shows or commercials, or comedy writing. Try to get into that, but I feel like your attitude of "this job isn't important" might hinder your search or motivation a bit.

What constitutes a not so important writing job? That kind of mentality is certain to fail in a field based on creativity, regardless of the content. Do you honestly think anyone enjoys reading lousy, non-attentive writing?

Maybe you should take the things you must do more serious, and the things you enjoy a little less. Even though this is a forum, it is the Words forum and you are trying to invent yourself as a songwriter/poet in your life, yet your grammar and spelling mirror a 13 year old on instant messenger. I'd suggest you work on your grammar and spelling before even attempting a career in any field. Plus, you've shot down every constructive idea given to you, so I won't bother.

welcum 2 the intranet, and my spelling is at least that of a foreteen year old. n ppl read bs writing all the time, bday and christmas cards for example, but think wat u want as i already gave my reasons in my original post about y i cant write anything too serious at the moment. and theres been good input, but all of it takes time, i need $ now

I suggest contacting a career counselor and financial consultant or lawyer. Also, don't be too proud for welfare.
