Jeremy Corbyn: A very old fashioned breath of fresh air?

Here is a typical opressed iranian woman

in this country it was a crime to be homosexual not that long ago, based on christan dogma. Look at the american christian nutters for plenty examples of how backward they are. Even in the UK and Ireland there is still antiabortionist pressure, an abortion clinic had to close in the UK recently because of aggressive protesters, so it cuts both ways.

people in the west and particularly america are totally deluded into the idea that they are the epitome of civilisation as they sit on their sofas getting pissed and watching xfactor or benefits street.

Funny how some of the most freaked out people are the ones that have never really travelled beyond a holiday resort in magaluf in their lives.

Makes you think blair's either completely messianically stupid or he wants corbyn to win (so the party gets wrecked (he hopes) and the blairites come to the resuce). Apparently a last minute surge of supporters put the total of voters in the leadership election over 600,000 (~300,000 signed up since corbyn)

(and ismene if you want a more nuanced/generous view of islam (doesn't seem like you do) try karen armstrong's books (rather than american right wing nutjobs' version)

But you can point to progress in the west over the last 400 years. I'm confident that we arn't going to legalise beating your wife up. I'm not so confident of that in middle eastern countries.

True but they tend to be badly educated and at the poorer end of the social spectrum like Timothy Mcveigh. With muslims intolerance and deranged religious fervour seems to go hand in hand with wealth and a good education. Like the schoolteacher behind the 7/7 bombings. It's hard to see any way of making progress when an education is of no help.

lmao, a crime to be homosexual.

homosexual behaviour was partially decriminalized in england & wales in 1967, according to wikipedia. Until 1861 there was the death penalty for it.

haha. tony blair must be quaking in his boots at even the faintest chance of him being held to account for his crimes. best comment seen at the guardian below his article "saying tony blair was good because he won 3 elections is like saying fred west was a good builder."

The idea that homosexuality was solely proscribed by the church (at least in legal terms) isn't strictly true. Until 1553, it was completely legal as a civil matter, and was only occasionally dealt with by the ecclesiastical courts, who were more concerned with matters of property, etc. Convictions were few and far between.

It was Thomas Cromwell, during the reign of Henry VIII, who pushed through the first Buggery Act in 1533. This was enacted, in part to curb bestiality as well as homosexuality. Good ol' Hank used it as an excuse to falsely accuse and subsequently execute priests and nuns, and confiscate their possessions; things which he could not have done under previous laws.

Of course, the law did define 'buggery' as 'an unnatural sexual act against the will of God and man', so religious dogma is certainly in there, no mistake. Interestingly, however, oral sex between males (or any act not involving anal penetration) remained completely legal. Does this tell us something about Henry, the avid fan of naked wrestling, I wonder?

If wolf hall was half accurate (probably not but i remember it better than my history lessons) cromwell maybe introduced it as a tool of intrigue and blackmail, same way our secret service use(d) gay brothels and paedo rings (eg kincora) - [clunky segue]:

...speaking of which, that simon danzuyck who brought up the paedos in parliament is calling to stop the leadership election (i thought i didn't like him); whereas tom watson (another paedo-outer (and murdoch-botherer)) might just have earned my deputy leadership vote when he stood up for the legitimacy of the contest (no doubt self-servingly) - tbh there was noone else even close - i was going to leave it blank; i will be leaving my second/third preferences blank though cos i don't want my votes being used by any spad/warmongers

Undoubtedly - the clergy were the biggest threat to Henry's (and Tommy Cromwell's) authority, so the law was passed solely to curb that power and annex monastic wealth and lands. Ironic, considering that many would seek to blame the the church for its enactment.

It was almost a carbon copy of the manner in which the Knights Templar were dispossessed and discredited, and for a later example, look no further than Charles Stewart Parnell. Though I would have to throw that one in. ;)

Is anyone fooled by this chaps charade of riding his bike and taking public transport everywhere he goes? Such a man of the people.

If he was truely a man of the people he'd be driving to work in his leased german car he cannot afford while pretending he is earning an above average salary via the medium of semi suggestive self indulgent facebook posts.

The man is a fraud.

Sam: Well i did drop in kincora for you too ;)

And i said (arrogantly) to take it to the theo thread, but now i want to answer this from ismene:

Surely the comparison should be between islamic people (albeit with a twisted non-islamic version) prepared to travel across the world fight in a war/be a terrorist, and maybe chop someone's head off; and the clean cut american/british soldiers/drone operators/civil servant/minister who are following their society's rules to the letter, who knowingly take actions that result in many tens/hundreds/thousands of people dying horribly, some of them even being decapitated (or just completely disintegrated) by the awful high-tech weapons used. If anything, i'd have thought that the ones who are actually prepared to wield the sword (or bayonet) and do the killing face to face are a smidgen less evil than the ones who never see the blood and live in a comforatable illusory world we're they are saving the world.

A death is a death, but in numerical terms the handful of islamic nutters in operation around the world (arguably working for us anyway) are a mote compared the entire wooden cathedral of evil that 'our side' has accumulated in its eye, even over the last 50 years.

Read Mark Curtis' book Secret Affairs if you want to find out the history of radical islam (and how the british and us government nurtured and used it for our own anti-democratic/neo-imperialist aims)

Satire's corpse just twitched: Daily Mash: Party founded by Keir Hardie being infiltrated by socialists

A BRITISH political party, founded over 100 years ago by socialists is ‘being infiltrated by socialists’, it has been claimed.

The Labour Party, started in 1900 by self-confessed socialist Keir Hardie, has seen a ‘suspiciously large influx’ of people who believe a lot of the same things as he did.

A senior Labour official said: “These people are clearly very interested in politics, but for some reason they haven’t joined the Conservative Party. It would appear they are really into redistribution of wealth, nationalisation and the welfare state. It’s all very sinister.”

Jane Thompson, who joined the Labour Party yesterday, said: “At first I double-checked to make sure I wasn’t an MI5 agent.

“I’m pretty sure I’m not, though MI5 can do all kinds of weird things. Anyway, the most likely explanation is that I now believe the Labour Party could potentially choose a leader with whom I actually agree.

“Also, I was a member from 1981 until 1994. At that point I decided it wasn’t really for me anymore. Something must have happened.”

EDIT: oh, and they've barred Mark Steel and Ken Loach from joining, cos we just don't need sinister people like that in the party

Is it just me or does all of this anti-Corbyn warnings coming from Tony Blair make Corbyn seem even more desirable?

I'm not sure if his policies will bode well for the economy.. but what is the economy? Bull crap.

Who's really noticed any difference or felt any better off by this growth? I know hundreds, thousands of people have severely felt the negative (my gf being one - universal credit - designed to fuck people over)

We're slaves to the central banking system and until we fuck that off then all governments along with most people will be in a state of perpetual debt..
