Japanese Anime & Manga

Has anyone got any news on the Ninja Resurrection series or have I been in kept in the dark too long? I've only yet to see the first two volumes 'Jubei's Revenge' and 'Hellspawn'....

Animation can be found everywhere, but whether it's to Japanese standards or not is a different story. Most animation produced, apart from whats coming out of Japan, would orginate out of America. And this is where it all falls apart - the Americans believe that a cartoon is a cartoon and therefore only the domain of kids. Animation produced will be aimed at kids and this will have results two-fold.
1. Animation is not of great detail - animation styles are quite basic compared to Anime. With the exception of Disney and Dreamworks who put alot of effort into their art work.
2. Content is less involved and intense as its aimed at children. Even many series from Japan that make it to the US for dubbing are often "dumbed down" in order to reach the target audience. Case in point Cardcaptor Sakura and its evil spawn Cardcaptors - i could go on forever with what they did. Although they have learnt their lesson recently with Cardcaptors and Dragonball Z that they are best left alone!
The Japanese put alot more effort into their animation, storys, characters and voice actors because anime is entrenched into their culture. It's a direct descendant of Manga, and anyone who knows anything about Japan will know the importance of Manga in their culture. It's a detailed area to go into here, but once you understand its origin you'll understand why you don't find animation of the same calibre as you do in Japan. Everyone from kids to old men read Manga - graphic novels (manga) account for an incredibley high percentage of all books sold in Japan. Animation features such as Spirited Away, Princess Monoke, My Neighbour Totoro etc etc actually grossed more at the box office than films such as Star Wars!
Stick with Japanese anime, afterall they are the best :)

Volcano High isnt animation of course, although the format of the film was done like an anime. i still found it enjoyable anyway.

just came back from spirited away. most excellent film... surreal and still retaining the appeal of a child's adventure/fairytale. much better than princess mononoke which i thought was somewhat overhyped (central theme in that is somewhat passe).
the way spirited away's parallel storylines developed kinda reminded me of neil gaimen's stardust, which too is a fairytale, for adults. i see some similarities between the two.
being a hopeless romantic, i would have preferred it if the film had a better closure to the haku/chihiro storyline as they were parted very abruptly, but i assume it was done so to leave the viewer wondering.
:)

Twigz, Oli and I went and saw Spirited Away on monday arvo.. and like Vurt said, fantastic movie. I dunno what else to say about it cept that its a movie I could definately watch over and over again and still enjoy it as much as the first time.
and man.. I want one of those soot creatures! hehe :)
stace.

is there a good video store around which has a wide selection of anime titles for rent? I enjoy anime but I'm not prepared to pay 30 bux to own them. Melb btw.

The video library around me only have major features such as Akira, GitS, Spriggan, Perfect Blue etc etc - no series apart from Pokemom and DBZ - like they're anime anyway :P *hides from ghost* ;)
I think from memory Hobby Japan in the city hire out anime - but I'm not sure whether they are fansubs/bootlegs or legit copies. Many of the anime clubs also hire out anime, but alot of it is fansubs.
You're other option I guess is Digisubs

lol ok
Fansub - is a Japanese anime not yet liscenced anywhere else bar Japan - fansubbers will obtain the release from many sources and add their own subtitles (often inferior in translation than legit releases). The "code of practice" (although fansubbing is illegal full stop), is that funsubbers will continue subbing a series until it is liscenced outside of Japan. Obtaining a copy of a fansub is free plus the cost of the video tape - if you've paid for a fansub you've been ripped off. Many fansubbers today will continue to fansub a series well after it has been liscenced.
A Digisub is just a fansub converted to a file format such as an AVI or MPEG - fansubs come in video tape format. Digisubs can be obtained off the net quite easily using P2P programs such as Direct Connect or IRC - there a heaps of anime hubs you can join.
Bootleg DVD's have been popping up big time lately and they are inferior in quality - the biggest way to tell a bootleg is that it will include Chinese subtitles!
I hope I haven't confused you anymore!

hey! pokemon may be a cartoon but it has pikachu in it alright? ;)
nezo - chinatown has heaps of choices. some of the shops sell and do rental as well. theres a shop in the paramount shopping arcade, and hobby japan in the midcity arcade, and various video shops around the little bourke/russell cnr (theres one on russell and one on little bourke).

Just stumbled across this, thought I'd stick it up for the Melbourne anime fans.
The Astor Theatre
Monday - December 30 - 7:30 PM - 45 minutes
First feature (TRIPLE-FEATURE session with
Ghost In The Shell and Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust)
Blood - The Last Vampire [MA]
Director: Hiroyuki Kitakubo
Anime/Manga/Japanese/Horror - Move over Buffy! Saya is part of a secret team destroying vampires. She is sent undercover as a student at the American air base in Yokota, just before Halloween. She discovers that two of her classmates are vampires in disguise just as they are preparing to attack the school nurse. A spectacular battle ensues. (AJP)
Ghost in the Shell [MA]
Ghost in the Shell is a Manga based movie of a futuristic world in which the electronic net and cities are as one and cybernetically enhanced people are the norm. Computer rendered graphics is integrated well into the hand-drawn animated action of the story. Blending traditional anime style people in an environment (that sometimes resembles photo realism) as vast as the world it portrays. Overall "Ghost" is an enjoyable experience and it is a must-see for anime fans. "Ghost in the Shell" refers to the main character, Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg who works for a secret agency of the Japanese government in the not-so-distant future. (AJP)
Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust [MA]
Director: Yoshiaki Kawajiri
JapAnime. This latest production from the Madhouse Studio of Japan is a retelling of the original Vampire Hunter D anime classic. A Gothic Vampire story impossible to replicate as live action. A wealthy family contracts the services of bounty hunters to rescue their kidnapped daughter from the clutches of a Vampire named Meier Link. Enter a motley crew of Professional Vampire Killers to track down Meier. To assure success, the Elbournes also employ D, a mysterious and feared Dunpeal (a Human-Vampire). The bounty hunters race against each other to see who can first overtake Meier and rescue the daughter. During the chase, the hunters become the hunted. The film is considered a classic by many anime fans, many of who were ecstatic to see a sequel being made after all these years. Fans of original D will especially love it. (AJP)

Tickets are $10 flat if memory serves but dont quote me. The Astor is located on the Corner of Chapel street and Dandenong Road in St Kilda.

Thanks Genasirus!
GitS and Bloodlust on the big screem - yum!
Vampire Hunter D - great animation and CG, too bad they forgot about a story line - oh and charactor development - what development? Two thumbs down from me, but I guess worth watching at least once for the eye candy.

im trying to watch evangelion: death and rebirth, right now. but it doesnt seem to be following any logical structure? or rather, chronological order as the story was told in the individual episodes.
so im all confused now, did i choose the wrong menu option and im watching the wrong thing? :\

haste - I guess the car aspect caught me more than anything because I can realate to all the paraphenalia in it but um.. I've wastched the entire series a few times over..
Stage 1
Stage 2
Stage 3 (Move)
Extra Stage
Battle Stage
I think there may/may not be a Stage 4 available as a series/movie.. but I've been out of it for awhile so I'm not sure.
Definatley worth it tho.. I like the story line quite a bit :)

The first three quarter of Death and Rebirth is a re-cap of the whole series and is meant to tie up any loose ends. The last 15 minutes or so is the start of End of Evangelion. And if you're still confused Vurt don't worry - its the very nature of EVA ;)
Ruski - I'll have to give it another try, I can get my hands on some fansubs.

went to hobby japan yesterday. volcano high is available for rent for anyone interested (see earlier pages in this thread for positive responses other than the dodgey comments on page 5 ;) ).
they've also stocked up bigtime - saw alot alot of titles, including .hack//sign I and II (how many are there haste?) , and the tenchi muyo box set which ive been looking for! it was on hold for someone but i can order one anytime i want. there are many old titles which are hard to find as well...
and totoro toys! ive heaps so i shant buy anymore, but it always makes my day to see totoro around.
:)

Ghost - the .hack//sign series consists of 26 episodes (of which I have all :D - fansubbed of course) How many volumes this equates to depends on the distributor and how many they put on each dvd.
The Region 2 release (Japan) will consist of 9 volumes - volume 7 is currently scheduled for release in Japan.
Bandai has secured the liscence for Region 1 releases but have yet to announce its release date. Madman have the rights to Region 4 releases and are scheduled to release mid 2003.
Out of interest Ghost - how much was the tenchi muyo box set? I might have to pop in, haven't been there for awhile.
