It's interesting that here in the UK we do use oxycodone quite a lot, hydromorphone almost never. Pallidone SR™ 8mg is the pill with the most although that bare phenolic hydroxyl means oral bioavailability is quite low. I think that is why oxycodone is used as orally, about 10% of any dose is metabolized in vivo to oxymorphone - so whacking them up essentially halves the activity.
We do use diamorphine hydrochloride and I assume the two to be quite similar from a medical perspective - a DLR which at one dispels all physical and emotional pain while bringing the patient into a state of euphoric detatchment.
