It's Not What You Know...



I get the impression Andrew Loog Oldham isn't a particularly nice person but he was SO tuned in to making money. He used session musicians to play instrumental versions of hits by the band HE managed, The Rolling Stones. He 'produced' orchesteral versions of their music and got a significant portion of the royalties in spite of NOT being the producer, engineer, or even present at the recordings.

Such was the rush for fans to own EVERYTHING he didn't even need a big ad spend. He placed ads in the Official Rolling Stones Fanclub magazine and proudly noted that there was almost 1 for 1 sales.

I'm sure the scams have got far more sophisticated but the fact corruption is still so rife and the industry so favours the status quo, a lot of the MOST interesting music is turning up on Bandcamp and the most interesting re-releases on labels that specialize in one specific area of music such as Analog Africa.
