Isopropanol's strong depressant effects

isopropanol(isopropyl alcohol), commonly found in a 70% solution as rubbing alcohol or a 95% solution in "swimmer's ear" products, has profound CNS depressant effects.

not to be confused with methanol, which is the alcohol that causes blindness and is sometimes confused with isopropanol, isopropanol when ingested has effects similar to ethanol, but has more similarites to chloral hydrate and diethyl ether as it felt more sedating.

now i'm not desperate for a drink as an experiment like this would seem to show, this was done simply out of curiousity. i ingested about 15ml of 95% isopropanol mixed with equal parts water in a "shot" and quickly drank some fruit juice to mask the taste.

after about 30min i felt "drunk" as i would with ethanol, but after some time heavy sedation started to set in and i was on the border of a being in a stupor. the heavy drunk feeling and stronger sedative/hypnotic effects reminded me very much of chloral hydrate. also anesthetic effects were stronger than that of ethanol. after a couple hours i went to sleep and woke up(today) to my suprise with no real hangover(others who did this complained of a bad hangover).

the positives of isopropanol are it's long lasting effects, strong sedative/hypnotic effects, potency(one shot and you're fucked up), and ease of obtaining it(if you don't feel like going to the liquor store). the negatives are that of ethanol but with the smell of acetone on your breath, bad taste, burn as it goes down, and its slightly more toxic than ethanol(but isopropanol isn't as toxic as you'd think).

i'm pretty sure this is a GABAergic like ethanol, but more potent. it's effects as far as euphoria goes seems slightly less than that of ethanol, but isopropanol still has strong intoxicating effects.

so if you're ever bored and want to try a new downer or you're out of booze, i'd recommend trying it. just remember how potent it is and to dose correctly.
 
When I was a kid and didn't have access to real booze I tried this myself... I had read a pharmacology book at the library and the chapter on alcohol poisoning said that isopropanol has similar toxic effects to ethanol, so I had the courage to do it. I ingested about 50 milliliters of IPA and the effect was about the same as after drinking a six-pack of beer. Isopropanol is metabolized to acetone, and the day after doing this I experienced the disgusting after-effect of being able to smell the acetone in my own breath! When I later had to use isopropanol for recrystallization in a college chemistry experiment, I almost puked when feeling the familiar smell of IPA... The stuff might have the same effect as ethanol, but in my experience, it's just too disgusting to do more than once.
 
Isopropanol is much worse then ethanol,it is very much worse on the liver,like ethanol,but it creates even more toxic metabolites,moreso than ethanol which produces toxic metabolites in the liver..We use 91% Iso- to dissolve psuedo pills to make into pill powder for making meth,or rather we did about 10 years ago before they got so strict with the psuedo pills,so thats one example of how it is not agood idea to drink Isopropyl alcohol,although ethanol is bad for you also,it's just a little better for you than iso- is..
 
Drinking rubbing alcohol? Pass. If you need a drink that bad pawn your computer and go to the liquor store :(
 
The way I see it is that it is just just another intoxicating alcohol.

Methylene(2-Methyl 2-Butanol) Was funner, longer lasting and a lot more euphoric than either Ethanol or Isopropyl. Plus, it tasted a lot better, not any worse of a burn than high-proof ethanol.

where would i find methylene?
 
It's sold as a cleaner much the same as isopropyl. Order it from the internet... There is medical literature on the internet to help you figure out the dosing.
 
hmmm... nice, the iso is working again and synergizing well with temazepam and clonazepam.

however this will likely be my last isopropanol experiment as whisky(Johnny Walker Blue Label or Wild Turkey, i like my whiskey), vodka(Grey Goose or Absolut Citron), and a 1992 bottle of Dom Perignon(smooth and fabulous) go down much smoother and i don't feel like an alcoholic desperate for a buzz...

Being desperate is all in your head.

Drugs are drugs. It's just another alcohol, you just have to take special care.

2-methyl-2-butanol was much less euphoric for me than ethanol. It also tasted horrible, and for hours every burp tasted horrid. Havn't pursued further (i find soma, benzos, phenprobamate or ethanol far superior). If you get euphoria from it, though, that's cool, and I wish I did too.

And, my god, that is a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE name for it, and I can't find any sources that call it that.

Methylene refers to a functional group (which is not present in 2-methyl-2-butanol). It's one letter away from methylone, which in itself is far too similar in name to methedrone and mephedrone.
Worse still, there is a chemical called Methylene Chloride, which is used as a solvent (or was - it's being phased out because it's toxic and damages the ozone layer), and would fucking kill you if you took it mistaking it for 2-methyl-2-butanol!

Holy shit!8o I meant Methylbutanol... That is truly my bad. I was fucked up and tried to go off the top of my mind. Must have been really whacked, as I never go off the top of my mind.

I find it has a higher Anti-anxiety feel to it, and I'm a stressful person.
My euphoria Per Se, is more of a really overwhelming unwinding type feel.

Damn, I knew I'd never heard of 2-methyl-2-butanol refered to as methylene, and considered asking Jay about it, but I never even considered methylene chloride. Nice work Azo, you might have saved some lives today.

Yeah, this had completely slipped my mind at the time.

It wasn't careless, honestly...
Don't make me feel too bad about it, I will be careful in future post.
 
i just woke up from a stupor, mixing it with benzos is a BAD IDEA.

jesus fucking christ i've never been this hungover, and i usually don't get hangovers. and the taste of acetone made me vomit apon waking up.

hell the sound of my neighbor's dog barking hurts my head.

fuck, for all that is reading this: stick to ETHANOL!!!
