Actually despite it being "detected" in the wild, it was caught and patched before any known successful hack occurring. Sites were shut down as soon as the bad code was detected by AI. All it caused was a bit of downtime while software was updated. All this happened on the "server level".
 
Long ago when he was just setting up the site, I got sent a lovely (fold out) poster which sadly is now buried in a book.

I seem to recall mention of other work taking up more and more time so it may be as simple as finding the time to patch.
 
The site is up thank god. I'm in the middle of a peyote alkaloid drawing so I was checking nervously every 30 minutes yesterday and the day before.
glad to know I'm not the only one who loves that site though.
