A legal high which killed a Ramsey teenager is now illegal in the Isle of Man.
Health Minister David Anderson told Tynwald the local death from the substance known as MDAI, in April this year, was the first anywhere in the British Isles.
He said the Island could have waited for the drug to be made illegal in the United Kingdom, but because that wasn't likely to happen in the near future action was needed to try and make people here aware of how dangerous it could be.
Mr Anderson said the potentially lethal danger of taking MDAI was being highlighted, but stressed that didn't mean other so called 'legal highs' were safe.
Tynwald unanimously supported MDA being moved to the list of illegal substances.

The death of a teenager from the Isle of Man has prompted the banning of so-called legal high drugs by the Manx parliament. It makes a group of substances, often referred to as MDAI, a Class C drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1976. The Manx legislation, which is expected to be followed by a similar ban in the UK, takes effect on 1 January 2012.

Oh, thought for a sec it was going to say, 'unanimously supported MDA being legalised' :D:(

Hmmm. Which statement is more likely to be correct? The BBC don't say exactly who they believe is expecting a similar ban in the UK. Weezle words?

Here is a more detailed report with reader comments..

Legal high is banned after death of teen

IOM Today

In Tynwald, Health Minister David Anderson said there were many legal highs accessible to the public and the move to ban MDAI was ‘just putting our fingers in the dyke’.

Excellent stuff well done Tynwald! - woe betide ANYONE who trys to sell this sort of s*** to my kids. A rhetorical sattement - my mind is completely closed to any contra argument (should leave scope for some halfwits to try and do exactly that)

Hopefully I'll get to try this one before they ban it stateside and quality goes down while price goes up as is customary when a drug is made illegal.

Eh, I'm a sucker for new experiences :P

I was kinda interested in seeing if it would be nice in combinations.

To be completely honest, I like trying new drugs, maybe more often than is healthy and with a tad too much excitement.

Anyone know the actual coroner/inquest results of the reported manx mdai death.

Reading the classification order it seems it will lapse after 12 months!!!

Where to the BBC get their info!!!!

it makes a group of substances, often referred to as MDAI,

MDAI is one thing only not a group of things, the banning order only mentions MDAI but admittedly covers different chemical Nomenclature names.

BBC I expect better.
