Is weed contributing to my depression?

That's sad to hear .looking back I was quite content I think which may have helped me to smoke often.i started full on when I was only 16 ,taking pipes in toilets during college then talking buckets at night with friends .
I suspect that played a big part on my mental health as I got older .I'm not sure if your brain is fully developed at 16 I suspect not.
I never seen grass till I was about 19 it just wasn't around
I also agree and think that it played a detrimental role in my mental health. Now that I don’t smoke for more than a year I can feel “scars” that cannot be healed.
Maybe we’re wrong and the brain will heal itself. I went full on from 14 as well.

Hey @cnnka , I know how you feel but it will get better. I stopped for a decade when it just wasn't working for me. I felt that thing where you wonder if you've fucked yourself. It will get better, the scars will heal, some of it just takes time. After a couple of years I was feeling better and three years like nothing happened. Yeah, it's long time scale. But at least it will happen.

I was profoundly depressed when I started using cannabis in my mid teens. Which is quite sad but it is what is. I started smoking. I found I was able to move on with life. Weed provided a headspace for me to relax and think my way through some of issues
I'm glad it helped , aided, assisted you a headspace to relax and think your way through certain issues you wanted to turn into opportunities to improve or at least deal with
A big factor is the strength of weed today. It wasn't that strong when I was at peak usage. It's a lot easier to develop chronic disassociation without really having to work at it. This is also a big problem.

Weed needs to be respected and used mindfully. Like all drugs really. But used carefully it has the potential to empower you and enhance your life.

It true, THC percents are much higher , causing way less inhales

I'm guessing edibles or decarbed weed , is the equivalent , of what Ozzy Osbourne, in his book , I am Ozzy, is basically the equivalent of the hash and expensive cannabis he used to have access to

Im assuming you mean dissociation

Why do you think cannabis now a days causes chronic dissociation ?

Are you thinking about getting baked all day type smoking?

Or decarbed weed, edibles?

Do you referring to THC only?

I totally agree w the used carefully. You can use things carless, careful and safe. All drugs require full of care, carefulness, being careful with

Idk I believe susceptible people who are sensitive to substances and also already have things going on, will find THC to worsen their depression.

My reasoning for this will include the fact that most people aren’t educated enough and will smoke ridiculously high dose THC without CBD/CBG etc

Will smoke THC with Tobacco (European problem)

Will smoke high dose THC and “mong”

So sitting in a room for extended periods, binge eating processed foods, binge watching or playing video games etc. avoiding interaction, exercise, hobby and structured routine

This is of course the archetypal stoner stereotype and I’ll see back lash for this, I knew people who were the opposite who would partake in meaningful activities and intentions in cannabis smoking, but then winter in the uk would hit here and they’d be the same.

I’ll never forget one of the times I was in a circle with friends, and I got ridiculously high, to the point I got my crazy dissociative and paranoid introspection, witnessing all these poeple sat together but completly disjointed, phones and tv on, no one talking about any kind of shared interest but all of us sat in a room on drugs disconnected.

That’s when I had a penny drop, and of course these guys were doing their thing and they said they were okay, but none of them really seemed happy, and it did seem like a mechanical coping mechanism, chain smoking spliffs and just watching TV/Games/Phone in near silence.

Cannabis has to be used intentionally otherwise I believe it can lend to behaviours that make you more depressed.

If you have any kind of neurosis, and do not factor this into cannabis use, it is quite easy to have very negative experiences, and then to also keep falling into using it for the ability it causes you to be become mongy and detached.

Yes I concur this is not everyone, but it really does seem to be vunerable people, who almost always use cannabis in a really silly way.

I also believe the endocannabanoid system is not understood and megadosing THC and other forms of it, will have an impact on your behaviour leading to depression when hitting tolerance.

Yeah dissociation. Cheers.

Why does it cause it this? Because it is so easy (due to strength of weed) to smoke yourself into a psychedelic state. Where before you had to work at using multiple methods. Everything wasn't 30%+ thc. There wasn't all the synthetics getting sprayed onto bush and sold.

Yes thirty percent is about common now a days

As far as Im aware cannabis is super carefully grown bc of old regulations , and bred like dogs with so many different strains, and they keep coming

I would think people would be scared to put unnatural stuff on their plants, bc it could cause legal concern and or negative effects

I know one can add terpenes to buds like with lemon infused oil. @Allylbenzene do you know if certain growers spray certain chemicals on flowers?

What synthetics are sprayed on plants, buds?

"Higher numbers sell better" whether it's the American or UK market. From what I've read on icmag/reddit, some (many?) big companies will "mess with the numbers" by carefully choosing the sample that's sent for testing and some labs "help" them to maximise the %. Theoretically, 21% could be listed as 30%. The future4200.com forums are good for gaining insights into the market and schemes being used.

Afaik, some (many?) USA/Canadian big companies use herbicides, pesticides and/or fungicides, plus other growth additives (eg PGRs). Afaik only the illicit growers would spray buds with synthetic cannabinoids.

I experience depressive symptoms that are completely relieved with THC. However, when the THC wears off, I experience depressive symptoms that sometimes feel worse than the initial depression. Is this due to THC keeping my receptors downregulated or whatever, such that I now need it in order to get back to baseline? Or is that not really a thing?

I ask because I notice a lot of uncertain thoughts arising when I use it, along the lines of "am I just prolonging my depression?" or "is this just soothing symptoms while exacerbating the underlying stuff?" and I come from a social circle that frowns upon weed use, so I sometimes feel shame about it. I want to feel okay about using it to treat depressive symptoms mostly so I can stop dwelling on this topic so much. Any insights or ideas would be appreciated!
Weed can make it harder to regulate your own mental processes and emotions. It also (in my experience at least) makes it harder to self reflect.

I think it might be worth looking at your non-drug related coping skills and hobbies. Is it difficult to do to them if you're 100% sober? Is weed the first thing you turn to, above all else?

It might also be worth taking a break to "reset" and get a feeling of what your baseline actually is after being sober for a while.

I'm a massive hypocrite though because I'm very psychologically dependent on alcohol.

From my own experience, using Cannabis often while being acutely depressed is not helpful at all. Me personally I might get distracted from depression while high but it lowers motivation which is never good when depressed. I also can worsen anxiety leading to panic attacks when the bad feelings hit while under the influence. I have never felt true antidepressant effects from weed. this is my personal experience, ymmv of course.

OP here. After a break of about 4 days, coming from a long stretch of use with difficulty skipping even a day, the depression has really lifted. Amazing what a reset can do!

Did you smoke on the fifth day?

Please keep us updated

I'm not going to use weed for a while to see how this changes over time. Last night was unexpectedly pretty rough, depression-wise. I know that the 4th to 5th day after stopping can be a wild ride so I'm just gonna let it play out for another week and see where I am

Weed is so easily abused.

If you use weed properly you should be using the right dose to enhance the activities in life. Or find the joy in them you might have lost due to depression. Which is usually a lot lower dose than you think.

Depends on your dose. Take a bit once a month and you'll feel like God. Take it every day morning till dusk and you'll feel like shit. Now you know that, you can figure out your dosing.

It might be causing your depression but it might not. We are all different and we never have the same experience or results…that’s usually not the answer people want to hear but it’s true
