Is Washington's team name 'The Redskins' offensive?

I think the name is fine and dont understand why people get all huffy puffy of the name of a sports team. But then again im a white male, so take that for what its worth.

Really, the reason we are having this conversation is because a small but vocal group of casino-wealthy indians are putting their clout behind a campaign to get the name changed. According to recent polls the vast majority of both native americans and non-native americans dont find the name offensive.

If the redskins cave, I think eventually the braves and blackhawks will too, I hope they stay strong and dont cave to outside pressure, especially considering they have a large devoted fanbase that love the name.

Ridicule? Please give me one example how they are ridiculing Native Americans. Their team name is the Redskins, every player on Washington identifies themselves as a Redskin. Why the fuck would they want to identify themselves with that term if it was meant to be negative? It obviously represents something along the lines of strength, power, courage and they are taking pride in representing Native Americans.. If anything they should be happy

Some were punished for speaking their native language. Today, he sees environmental issues as the biggest threat to his people.

The high school football team in his district is the Red Mesa Redskins.

“We just don’t think that (name) is an issue,” Yazzie said. “There are more important things like busing our kids to school, the water settlement, the land quality, the air that surrounds us. Those are issues we can take sides on.”

“Society, they think it’s more derogatory because of the recent discussions,” Yazzie said. “In its pure form, a lot of Native American men, you go into the sweat lodge with what you’ve got — your skin. I don’t see it as derogatory.”

Neither does Eunice Davidson, a Dakota Sioux who lives on the Spirit Lake reservation in North Dakota. “It more or less shows that they approve of our history,” she said.

North Dakota was the scene of a similar controversy over the state university’s Fighting Sioux nickname. It was decisively scrapped in a 2012 statewide vote — after the Spirit Lake reservation voted in 2010 to keep it.

Davidson said that if she could speak to Dan Snyder, the Washington team owner who has vowed never to change the name, “I would say I stand with him . we don’t want our history to be forgotten.”

In 2004, the National Annenberg Election Survey asked 768 people who identified themselves as Indian whether they found the name “Washington Redskins” offensive. Almost 90 percent said it did not bother them.

The thing that is funny is the majority of people who are making this an issue are white people who have no connection to Native Americans at all.

I'm going to take a shot in the dark here and say you don't have any Native American friends. I do, and every single one of them would laugh in your face about this.. None of them find it offensive

Nice to see that impartial moderation in action. Honestly I could care less the only thing is that this is a current event and political in nature so I figured it would be a good thread idea. I start interesting threads it is just what I do I cannot help it.
