I think it is for sure but I also take offense to others.
The Bills should change their name as it is purely an insult to Bill Clinton.

The Chargers should change their name because it sends the wrong message about accumulating debt.

The Cowboys are glorifying a group of people who were killers.

The Vikings glorify the murdering, raping and plundering of the most vicious group of thieves in history.

And the Patriots. Well come on now, those guys were just a bunch of terrorists who helped create a country that has created an upper class at the expense of working people.

The Browns? Just a code word for illegal immigrants.

The Cardinals are glorifying the hierarchy of the Catholic Church.


Do you find the term offensive? I feel they could just change the name back to the braves and make all parties concerned happy..

Seeing that Native Americans aren't a monolithic bloc, yes and no. More specifically, the Oneida Indian Nation, National Congress of American Indians, and most importantly, the American Indian Movement have all organized protests and voiced opposition to the name. Also, I believe the "All Blacks" refers to the uniforms. Would "The Abos" fly as an official sports team name in Australia?

The aboriginals in Australia got upset after the government tried to change the name of Mt. Niggerhead to something else. The aboriginals apparently quite liked the name niggerhead and found nothing bad about it.

To me, this whole deal is another stupid media situation like Trayvon Martin (yet again media glorifies racism you might think they are trying the divide and conquer strategy). Obviously they were a team of Maoris so the editor thought it was a mistake and changed it to All Blacks. So in a way it was pretty racist to begin with but I don't know anyone who wants to change their name 120 years later. Perhaps New Zealanders are thicker skinned or perhaps they don't have a litigious society where you could sue someone for suffering because you find a name offensive.

I recall reading just a few months ago of a media shit storm over racial slurs coming from a fan in the stands towards a player on the field in Australia. Your country isn't immune to racial sensitivity.

I'm not Australian, but Abo is a racial term up there with nigger or coon. It provokes a feeling of hatred. Redskins, to me anyway provokes images of warrior athletes in the same way as Chiefs or Braves do. It would be different if they were called redskins and the mascot was a negative stereotype. Most minorities embrace their heritage if they are proud of it. I doubt Green Bay cotton pickers would have lasted as long as the Packers even though a lot of people look down at blue collar workers.
