Is This the Answer to Drug Use?

if someone stood up and simply said "test the kids the same way you test the politicians" we'd have at the very least a much smarter government. for one, bush would be exposed for the third grader he is...

but instead we'd just get the more pleasant result of no tests. well, the more comfortable, anyway.

I someone tried that with my kid in UK, I'd go fucking mad. America is shit place to live.

America is a "shit place to live Compared to where?

America is shit place to live? There's a hell of a lot worse places you could live, Why don't you go "someone tried that with your kid in UK," and move to Yemen or say Darfur, then see if you go fucking mad.
I bitch about the fact our government feel's it has to regulate everything in order to "protect" us from ourselves. As far as this NY times article, I think this will be an extremely rare occurence. But remember public schools are funded by taxpayers. Bug the hell out of your Representatives and Senators. There's a fellow BL'er who has posted that NJ is notorious for being strict on drugs. So you gotta let people know you think this is wrong.

While I sort of agree that high schools should be drug free zones, and that drug use in high school beyond simple experimentation isn't such a good idea, schools should have zero authority to enforce student conduct outside of school.
IMO if they want high schools to be drug-free zones, they have to demonstrate some trust and confidence in the students. Drug testing has a bad effect on morale (of drug users and non drug users alike). It's an invasion of privacy, even though theoretically a minor is not supposed to have any...

Administrators say the tests help improve both school safety and public health by discouraging drug use among some troubled youngsters during school hours and by giving students a reason to resist peer pressure outside school.

This makes me laugh and insulted at the same time... I find it amusing that they just automatically follow the stereotype that everyone who uses drugs must automatically be troubled... Also, not one of my peers would ever have the power to pressure me into using drugs, I do it all of my own free will... I'm no sheep...

Who gave them the right to make that rule anyway? These are PUBLIC schools where the PUBLIC's kids go, therefore shouldnt the public people be the ones to make that decision? That should be something thats voted on, not just decided by the court, thats not what makes america a "free" country.

At the nursing office, tests are performed by a medical technician, Bobbi Jo Murphy, who lives in the district and knows many of the families. Even she can’t avoid some alienating moments: when students go into the bathroom, the water is turned off, to prevent anyone from diluting a urine sample or using the tap to heat drug-free urine that was smuggled in. “There’s a temperature strip on the container, and I can feel whether it’s the right body temperature; I can also tell by the smell,” she said, demonstrating with two sniffs of an empty vial. “If it doesn’t smell like ammonia, it’s not a fresh sample.”

How deliciously sanitary. Now those damn little drug addicts can't even wash their hands after using the bathroom. That'll teach em. 8(

Now all we need is the federal government to pay for the training of all school officials in distinguishing the smell of fresh urine from old urine and the drug problem will be solved.

I love the smell of burning tax dollars.

Is there actually a legal reason in the US for random testing only being applied to students participating in extracurricular activities, or are there some jurisdictions where any student can be forced to take a piss test? I wouldn't want to live or raise kids in a place where this was done. I'm sure American drug testing companies are happy about the current situation.

I'm totally using this article for an assignment I have to write in english. We have to debate a law or something that we think is completely ridiculous. My paper is awesome. I should post it here as a comparison to this :D
