Rhabdomyolysis in MDMA Intoxication: A Rapid and Underestimated Killer. “Clean” Ecstasy, a Safe Party Drug?

Abstract
Background: Ecstasy is a popular drug among young adults. It is often thought to be safe. The dose of methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) in a tablet of Ecstasy varies greatly, and there is also a difference in individual response to a dose of MDMA. Objectives: To increase the awareness of potential mortality in MDMA use. Case Report: We report the case of a patient with a lethal intoxication after pure MDMA intoxication. The serum toxicology screening showed an elevated level of MDMA (1.5 mg/L) but no other amphetamines or other drugs. Conclusions: The cause of death was a rapidly evolving hyperkalemia due to rhabdomyolysis. There is still a need to educate the public about the dangers of this so-called “safe” party drug.

No shit, Sherlock.
Drug education is the most egregiously underfunded category of education in the world today.
And anyone who thinks that pure MDMA is "safe" is simply ignorant.
That said, however, MDMA is far safer than many of the pharms that are legally prescribed, and arguably safer than alcohol, which doesn't require a prescription.
Its safety profile, moreover, is not a reason to make it legal/illegal, as some small-minded politician or journalist will see as the take-home message from this study, but rather a reason to increase scientific research and education.

I've seen many people on this forum say that it is safe.

It's sort of where David Nutt was going when he said it was safer than horseback riding (though horseback riding can certainly lead to rhabdo as well).

Bro I love you but I need you to back this up hardcore.

I don't think it's proven that MDMA has worse side effects than some of the pharmaceuticals used these days... Lol you can't say it's any more dangerous than these new pills they keep advertising on television here in the US. At the end the end they always say crazy shit like "side effects include: new/worsening cancer, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, liver failure, coma or death may occur as a result of a serious side effect. Talk to a doctor about taking >insert new drug name here<"

lol... I wish I was kidding

One person died from pure MDMA, ergo pure MDMA is not safe? That's the point I'm seeing the article make, and it's a ridiculous one.

Exactly... Some people get killed by fucking peanut allergies. Just because a couple people aren't built to handle it doesn't mean it's "dangerous" under responsible usage.

The reason people die from drugs is because our system focuses on punishing people for drugs rather than educating them on saferty in high school.

I think kids interested in drugs should be able to take some basic classes in high school on safety with various drugs and when they graduate HS be able to legally obtain them from a pharmacy.

Simultaneously this twisted system promotes organized crime to thrive by giving them a black market to run, causing government corruption from street cops all the way to the white house .

MDMA is by no means harmless, but people do die from harmless things everyday. I'm sure every substance/food in existence has been responsible for the death of at least ONE person at some point in history.

Bottom line: Taking drugs is a gamble, drinking is a gamble, sex is a gamble, getting behind the wheel of a car is a gamble...you get the picture. That doesn't mean there aren't ways to reduce the risks of those activities, but don't tell the government that when it comes to drug education. Their motto is "Just Say No...or Else". The 'or else' being prison time, death by overdose or lifelong addiction.

Pure MDMA carries a lot of unknown risks, some of which may include Fen-Phen like heart damage or neurotoxicity with repeated use. Like other amphetamines, it raises heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature while constricting blood vessels, increasing your risk for heart attack/stroke/hyperthermia. These are things people should know before using it, and they shouldn't be downplayed just because one "likes" the drug. Still, MDMA is comparatively LESS dangerous than alcohol or many other commonly used drugs.

Well I was under the impression that MDMA was more nuerotoxic than meth. By itself its not absolutely proven to be toxic but its main metabolite MDA is a nuero- and cardio-toxin. I mean, more toxic than meth is pretty dang toxic, even if its pure. They only legally make pure meth in one small dosage at least in the United States, the king of the pharmaceutical industry.

I think the length and intensity of the hangover most people get not to mention people saying they feel poisoned after taking it shows MDMA is far from benign, even compared to alcohol.

Which pharmaceuticals?

Again I'm just curious

"safe" is a qualitative term and may be practically useless here, except that some people interpret it to mean HAVE NO FEAR.

MDMA is certainly safer than coumadin, phenelzine or fentanyl. It has been proven to be safer than alcohol. But if you just ask:

the question is essentially without meaning.

Step one is to examine what rhabdomyolysis is.

I think you're being way too nit-picky with that one, especially considering it wasn't my word to start out with. My criteria was implicit anyways.
