Is life shit without drugs?

I just came out the jail to no friends no drugs no money and my life is fuckin boaring. I took drugs for the past 15 years resulting in many drug induced psychosis and many many addictions. I have been on methadone for 10 years. I drink beer most nights as its the only thing I can take as I stay with my mum but I noticed I have started buying toys like new phone new tv tablet computer etc. To keep me happy if it Wasent for this plus a few beers at night I really think I'd rather be back inside were i can take drugs without letting my mum down. Btw my mum buys me the toys.

I can't wait to get my own place so I can start to make money again which gives me a purpose in life plus I can enjoy whatever I want without letting my family down again. So yes without being able to get a job / have money to do things / have a reason to get up in the morning life is boaring without drugs. Even my fuckin dog gave me a reason and he died a month ago.

Rather interestingly (at least to me) the answer appears to be "just as much as human apes are". The rate of primates who will imbibe alcohol to excess (falling down, incapable of action beyond that) vs those who drink "moderately" (when available, consistently stop long before they get into trouble of any kind) vs those who never touch alcohol when available precisely matches that of humans.

To me this very strongly suggests an underlying genetic cause for alcoholism and perhaps addiction in general. This gene goes back several hundred thousand years at a bear (or chimpy) minimum and to match up so closely with all extant records of alcoholism in human beings Seems a no-brainer to me.

Knowing the little i do about modern genetics i hesitate to attribute genetic causes to human behaviours - at best there's a genetic influence. The genes have to be understood as part of an interactive system that learns and changes over time - it's difficult to unpick what's due to the initial starting points of the genes and what is due to the experience of the complex system (person) in question (like the relationship between the first few moves and the finished board in a game of Go). According to current science genes aren't simply passive code but an active network - the switching of the genes is varied over time in response to the environment in a constant process of feedback (this switching can even be passed on to children) - the old fashioned fatalistic gene determinism of the 90s is pretty much dead (mainstream accounts of genetics don't seem to have taken this change on board yet) (sorry for the OT; you gave me a chance to get on one of my waffle horses :)).

People don't realise what luxuries they have until it's all gone, and for most people they never loose the luxury of having a bed for example

If a homeless 14 year old child from let's say Philippines got an opportunity to move to a what we class as a shit area in the UK and have a bed with 4 walls around him; and opportunity to find work and make money... that kid would be the happiest he has ever been, but eventually that happiness fades and everything just becomes normal... eventually he would class life as shit... us humans want more and more, drugs give us more, they create an adventure in our mind, they create ideas for people to move forward

Drugs are chemicals, we are chemicals; your life is what you make it to be

Unless natural disasters / loss of relatives etc etc occur.... in that case you can't do anything about it... you just have to move forward; how you move forward is up to you

Life can't be great forever... what comes up must come down

They also give you a consolation and a friendly arm around the shoulder like nothing else in life can offer.

It's not sad - you just don't get the same feeling from human beings as you get from mushrooms. I don't get wondrous euphoria, cathartic exploration of my deepest emotions and memories, and a profound mystical insight talking to too many people - do you?

Well, if you expect wondrous euphoria, cathartic exploration of my deepest emotions and memories, and a profound mystical insight from a friendly arm around the shoulder, then yea mushrooms are better at this. But, consider cats

Are the chimps who get pissed filling a gap in their life? Or that jaguar that eats ayahuasca vine? Or those bears that sniff petrol?

I don't think it's fair to compare animals with humans in this instance. Animals are more instinctual. Whereas humans can comprehend fulfilment on a far deeper level. Saying that, no-ones going to argue that you cant enjoy an artificial high while having a fulfilling life - animals or human. I just think it's reasonable to assume, if you can achieve your dopamine/serotonin/endorphin rushes by applying yourself to real activities, you'll be less inclined to pursue the same rushes artificially. If anything, the artificial highs would only become an embarrassment to the natural highs.

I wasn't saying anything about religion distorting spirituality (but now you mention it...) - as you know i've got a relatively positive attitude towards religion (religious authority, not so much)

Yes you did. Not in such candid words, but it's hard to conclude you meant anything else from your post.

"You said:

"Religions generally replace what you're lacking/missing in your own life ..... People should always be looking to improve their own lives and negate their desire for Religions, rather than succumb to them.

Saying that, there is always a time and place for Spirituality in a rich and diverse lifestyle"

You're condoning spirituality and condemning religion. One can only infer that you are suggesting religion is some kind of a distortion to spirituality.

Why is it every time I post it turns into a religious discussion.

Can we rename this forum "European + Africa Drug and Christian Chastisment Discussion"

It isn't fair the way people keep bringing up Raasy's faith every time there's a debate. If someone of a muslim faith was treated this way there'd be uproar. All fair in the theo thread but bit unfair to keep using his faith against him in debates where it's not needed.

C'mon now you're all reasonable folk.

You're the one who keeps bringing it up.

No. This time he didnt if you read back. Vurtual did.
