First off Im not even really sure if your allowed to post this in the sports section b/c it pertains to a subject that already has a thread.

Granted the Bama fan was 60, still killing some of the barners historic trees seems like a bit much and I have done some distasteful shit IE pee inside a florida fans convertible Porsche while tailgating, thrown half empties at opposing fans, etc...
What do you a consider taking it too far?

she went to a basketball school :-P

IE pee inside a florida fans convertible Porsche
^^
fucking hillarious. Besides, florida fans have thrown jars of urine at rival fans.

the tree poisoning was going to far, though. However, I really do wish they'd stop TPing them-- that's a tacky nasty habit.

LMAO,sorry amy I really love that caveman that used to play for your school, Jnoah.

Im no hippy as many of you might know but I have a respect for life and fucking with old growth trees isnt right end of story.

I have to go with Amy on this one. All of the above are too far.

Seriously, how fucked up of a person do you have to be to piss in someones car because they root for a team that you don't like? I hate Florida more than anybody on Bluelight, but I'm not about to hunt down TLB and piss in his car.

I must be a bad person cause I LOLed really hard when I read it the first time. As an Alabama fan I really wish he would have done something productive like broken Cam Newtons legs before the iron bowl. But like charles Barkley said this is what happens when your 48th in education. also what kind of moron calls Paul Finebaum to brag about doing it? Sometimes im ashamed to be from this fucking state.

That article was really horribly written. Ugh.

This is definitely too far, these are colleges after all!

Me neither, but I love that fans of my team are out there doing it for the lulz. IDK, seems a lot less damaging than the tree, too.

I suppose it all depends on whether or not it is your car that got pissed in.

I have to remember to lock my doors when outpourings of rednecks come to my town. Thanks for the heads up.

Unacceptable.

Nothing should be killed for a sports rivalry.
I mean...what's next? Animal sacrifice of the other teams mascot?

Those were beautiful trees

:(

i think pissing on the tree would have been acceptable

Agreed. Now, you'd need a dozen friends to protect you while you did it, but yeah - pissing on the tree is fine.

Killing it? It's a freaking tree for one thing - it it's done nothing to you. Second, it's older than you will ever fucking be - show some respect.

Marring an opponents sacred traditions...let me think. I could see painting the Bobby Bowden statue outside FSU's stadium in Orange and Blue, but not pulling it down and melting it. I could see pissing on the hedges at UGA, but not tearing them out (though, I understand some UGA fans to try to take mementos of the hedges or grass home with them). Miami...well, there's not much you could do to a school with no focal point to deface. I mean, you could have pissed in the hallways of the old Orange Bowl, but the place was an oversized urinal to begin with. Fight with the Ibis mascot? Nope, not much to do to them. I could see fans defacing (painting) the bull gator statues outside Florida field. Or perhaps sneaking onto the field and painting something over the endzones, or more practically the big F in the center of the field. But none of those are really destructive, nor as historic or traditional as Toomer's oak trees.

I'm struggling to come up with traditions or objects that mean as much to a school as the oaks did at Toomer's corner. I can't think of things that would mean as much to the fans, and even those lesser things I can imagine...destruction is not even up for consideration of doing.

i'm hoping this causes a real life civil war between the state of alabama.

hopefully they'll kill eachother off.

EDSBS'S take on it this morning...

There's a thousand very stupid columns out there today about it and we're not linking any of them, because this has no larger implications for society and especially not for Alabama, the state that wakes up 365 days a year crazier than a feral cat put into a running dryer. Like a syphilitic Lord Byron waking up craving opium and dirty women, they were mad yesterday, are mad today, and will be mad, bad, and dangerous to know tomorrow. If this part of the country weren't full of at least seven states of similar insanity and decrepitude, it'd be a shame, but it's kind of hard to pick the crazy one out of the lineup when they're all pantless and ranting about the secret government wires in their head.

In summary: the rivalry is not out of hand, sports does not occupy too large a role in our lives, and everything remains as ghoulishly fascinating, horrifying, and magical as it was yesterday. Settle the fuck down.

Yes...it was way out of hand and doing anything to a rival school's property is beyond retarded. The thing i hate is how "fans" of schools are lumped together so bad. I am a FLORIDA fan...hate Miami..hate FSU...but i have very good friends that went to and are fans of both. So does that mean i hate Miami fans? Ummm NO..not unless i have a reason to. Whenever people literally judge others based on what college they cheer for..i feel bad for them. I remember being at a Fl/Tenn game in G'ville in.....2000(?) when some Vol fans literally killed a Florida fan by smashing his head in a stairwell. Yeah, that would be the day that i decided to hate Tennessee more than my in state rivals but seriously, how old are you? Oh thats right, this guy is 60!

This story, while sad, isnt about sports fans, its about a very strange old man. Any time something like this comes up i remind myself that the word Fan is short for Fanatic, and therefore am forced to throw logic out the window.
