The people who were paranoid about the public payphones would usually cover the speaker with a handkerchief, but I never bothered.

I suppose you could do the same with earphones.

Just a quick wipe with alcohol or hand sanitizer . When I was in nursing school that’s one thing they emphasized not to share our stethoscopes because of bacteria in the ear.
