Harm Reduction Is it safe to drink and/or take Kratom on Luvox?

My doctor just put me on Luvox which is an SSRI and it says on the bottle "do not drink on this medication".

However, when it comes to SSRIs and anti depressants I don't really trust that label because I was on Prozac (which is very closely related to Luvox) for 20 years and there's literally not a single time I've ever drank in my life that I WASN'T on Prozac (so we are talking drinking on Prozac more than 1,000 times) and I never once had any problem.

I drink frequently and have a very high tolerance and am not willing to quit drinking right now and I know that SSRIs are not serious CNS depressants so shouldn't it be reasonably safe to drink on Luvox?

I mean, is there a single SSRI or anti depressant in the world where it DOESN'T say not to drink on it? Yet not all of those combos are truly as dangerous as it is to mix some serious CNS depressants with alcohol.

People do it all the time and it's not the same as, say, having 10 drinks after taking some Ambien which could be SERIOUSLY dangerous as Ambien is a serious CNS depressant.

I mean, unless it's TRULY life threatening or dangerous to drink on it then I am probably going to drink on it sooner or later because drinking is just a natural part of my life.

Also, is it safe to take Kratom on an SSRI like Luvox or could that cause Serotonin Syndrome?

I've taken Kratom many times on Prozac which is also an SSRI with zero problems.

Does Kratom have any effect on serotonin?

Thanks

No one has an answer to this?

Really??

I mean, Luvox is an SSRI so it's probably pretty similar to Prozac right?

I drank on that for years with no problem and also took Kratom while on it.

Or is it possible that it's different enough that it could be a bad idea?

Any info would be appreciated.

Is it safe to take Kratom on SSRIs?

My doctor just put me on Luvox which is an SSRI similar to Prozac.

I've used Kratom many times while on Prozac and was fine but I want to know whether or not it is safe to mix Kratom with Luvox or if people don't know about that specifically, whether or not Kratom is safe in general to mix with most SSRIs and whether or not it has any effect on Serotonin that could cause serotonin syndrome.

I'm assuming that since it was fine on Prozac that it will also be fine on Luvox but I'm just not sure.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

The main problem with Luvox (and I'm assuming also why it's not prescribed much) is that it has some /very/ common interactions such as with caffeine. I would recommend either to try a different SSRI or not drink and/or take Kratom. It's vastly different than Prozac. Just because a drug is in the same class doesn't mean it'll carry the same interactions with it. I also vaguely remember that Kratom does have an impact on Serotonin in some way, but I can't recall the literature, but I'll look around for a bit to see if I can find anything.

I would definitely do a google search on drug interactions between the Luvox (fluvoxamine?) and mitragyne compounds. I know that it has a large degree of interaction with certain opioids, especially methadone. There is some commonality between opioids and Kratom that I am not too sure about. Drugs like Luvox and Cimetidine for instance, have a huge breadth of drug interactions, so if you consult the lists, it's likely that it will have some kind of interaction with a medication that you're taking. An above poster had mentioned caffeine, which most people I know use.

I see no reason it would be a problem, they're both very similar drugs. I don't think kratom has any effect on serotonin whatsoever, anyway.

No problems at all. I've been on celexa for 2 months and have taken kratom like, 7 times. I did notice more itching than usual, but then I took DPH and it was all good.

Yeah, I took it on Prozac without problems but now I just started taking Luvox and that has a shitload more interactions.

I think I might ask my doctor for something else instead because it seems to have so many interactions, even with caffeine which I drink too much of daily for me to think it's a good idea to be on something that can increase it's strength.

Play it by ear, take a small test dose and see how you feel. Nobody can say for certain how you will respond to these particular drugs.

Kratom is not contraindicated with SSRIs to the best of my knowledge. Nor does it strongly inhibit or induce liver enzymes of any sort or interfere with clearance of antidepressants.

... and by the way, "serotonin syndrome" is a pretty incredibly narrow scenario (combining any 2 of these: SSRI or MAOI or serotonin releaser). Kratom is not a serotonin releaser... it's an opioid and adrenergic. So there is no conceivable scenario where taking kratom is going to cause SS. It just doesn't.

Thanks man.

Of course, there is another reason it might not be a good idea, though I doubt it.

I found out Luvox can increase the strength of caffeine (and since I didn't know this and drink a lot of coffee I'm already thinking of getting off it...thanks for telling me doc...).

I know that Kratom is related to Caffeine, however, they still don't SEEM to be chemically related.

So, I guess there's a SMALL chance that somehow the Luvox could increase the strength of the Kratom and make my heart start going crazy, especially given that I drink coffee on my Kratom.

However, I've only been on Luvox for 2 days, so I doubt taking Kratom tomorrow would effect me yet.

I guess it's still probably a slim scenario that Kratom could be strengthened by the Luvox or that it's clearance from the body could take longer because of the Luvox, but it does have that effect for certain things like Methadone and Melatonin...

I'm talking to myself now LOL cause I don't think anyone has the answer to whether or not Luvox can increase Kratom's strength or make it take longer for the body to eliminate Kratom??...
