Opioids Is it Safe to Drink Alcohol While on Opiates?

I'm sorry, but no, I am no going to give someone reassurance about doing something that could result in death & for your information, I am a chronic pain patient on the fentanyl patch, oxycontin & oxycodone.

by that logic this board shouldn't exist. taking opioids alone can and do kill people. we're here to objectively give information to the user to reduce the harm that is inherent when taking drugs.

i'm pain patient as well, have been for close to 10 years now, and only 26 y.o. i've never ran into any undoings while only having a drink or two, sometimes going a little overboard on many occasions, though however have ended up sick with hot and cold flushes and sweating profusely which lead to spewing my ring up for hours on end - too high dose of opioids and alcohol combined.

like your doc said, everything in moderation. and seeing as you don't abuse your meds and haven't had any troubles in the past from a single drink i think it's reasonable and safe enough to assume/say you'll be fine just as you have been in the past

i would say one drink is fine and responsible. you shouldn't run into any problems apart from what ergic mentioned about dulling out some of the finer parts of the opioid high. if you go overboard on the alcohol you do risk a potential overdose or possibly just getting extreme nausea, possibly getting sick, ie spewing up and getting sick that way.

you see, their doctor even said that a drink shouldn't do any harm. now doctors are fallible just like everyone else but i agree in this instance.

naawwww, you had to get all personal within a reasonable debate? how sad i think i do have some kind of idea of what i'm talking about otherwise i don't think i'd ever had moderated several of the Harm Reduction Focus forums here in the past. i've also combined alcohol and opioids (among many other potentially dangerous combos) on countless occasions and am still alive so i think i have some idea of what i'm doing and putting into my body.

please point out my dangerous advice.

Kayla, one of the things I love about Bluelight is that we all have an unwritten rule of attempting not to judge one another. By definition, every drug user is irresponsible. It becomes little more than arbitrary semantics to say where that line is. I know polydrug users who combine alcohol and opiates, or benzos and opiates daily for years without issues. I also have known people that died from doing such. The point is, make your point without making it personal. Even if the "correct" answer is not to do it, the truth of the matter is, for the most part, one drink with a reasonable dose of most opiates (again, minus the ER opana) will most likely result in nothing more than an elevated buzz. But because of the tremendous amount of variables involved (including what the user believes a reasonable dose to be, tolerance, body metabolism, etc), it's impossible to approach any question of this type with a one size fits all approach. Therefore, always go with the safest option.

But please, drop the holier than thou shtick. Using logic to back your point is *thumbs up*, being a snob about it, is, well, for sites like Yahoo answers or drugs forum. Where half the people have no idea what they're talking about anyway and just like to assert their egos.

Now, sure, a drink with Vicodin or codiene is probably not going to cause much harm yet I still don't condone it, but sweetheart, this young lady is taking Extended Release Dilaudid. There have been many deaths resulting in the mixture of dilaudid & alcohol! Especially people coming into the ER after an accident occurring while drinking & then being given dilaudid for the pain, dead that same day!
I don't understand how you could condone such activity of someone take ER dilaudid. Even just one, yes ONE drink, could end up in her death. ER Dilaudid has a much higher dose of the medication in it, & when paired with alcohol, it could cause the pill to release all the medication at once causing an OD. Also, alcohol can potentate this medication also resulting in overdose!

If she wants reassurance and opinions, maybe she needs to talk to her doctor. I've been researching this since I had posted off just my own knowledge to find its more deadly than I imagined.

Don't you ever assure someone it's okay to do something that you know jack-shit about, go ask any doctor or at least someone with some common sense, they'll tell you the same thing I just did.

fuck man.....EVERYTHING CAN be safe, if you know how to do it properly.
Yes if you take your usual dose of opiates and have multiple drinks of alcohol ina short amount of time you will have badd side effects.
But if you only drink 1-2 beers max slowly then you should be fine and maybe even have a nicer all over high in general. although i dont usualy like mixing the two...

Lots of people and I'm one of them have an alcohol tolerance, mixing with opiates or other CNS depressants is dangerous any way you look at it. I've mixed hundreds of times and if life were fair I would have been dead long ago. You don't have an alcohol tolerance so be very careful.
