DMT can be scary in the same way any intense psychedelic can be scary - it can be very intense - but salvia is uniquely terrifying in a way that is very unlike DMT or just about any other drug. In my experience, salvia produces weird and sometimes uncomfortable physical sensation, and the experience itself can have a very foreign, alien, indifferent-to-hostile feel. The fear/anxiety DMT produces is more along the lines of "oh man i don't think i'm ready for this" when you first smoke it and start coming up. Once the effects kick in, I've never found it frightening or anxiety-producing. It feels quite 'clean' on the body and is often very euphoric. Sometimes the 'head rush' on the way up can be a little disorienting, but certainly not painful. The closest analogy I can think of for someone who's tried other psychedelics but not DMT is that, at sub-breakthrough doses, it's like jumping into the peak of the most intense shroom or acid trip of your life, then quickly coming back to baseline. It last just long enough to give you a taste of that 'tripping balls' headspace and intense visual distortions, usually with a healthy dose of euphoria, and you fast forward through the gradual comedown of other psychs. Breakthrough DMT experiences are about as impossible to describe to a DMT virgin as tripping in general to a psychedelic virgin. If you're not ready to take the plunge, though, sub-breakthrough DMT is still wonderful stuff.
