Nutritionist Andrea Garber (PhD), UCSF Division of Adolescent Medicine, explores whether fast food meets the definition of substance dependence.

This is a one-hour lecture given at UCSF.
Very interesting (and not just because I have been calling fast food a drug for many years, and it supports my claim with science ;)).
Watch her reasoning, applying the 7 criteria used to define addiction to fast food intake.
She makes her point very well, imo.

I did not watch the video yet but I can say unequivocally food is very addictive!! I am overweight myself so I know. It's like any other drug. You tell yourself "I'll only have one or a half of whatever food" before it's over I have overdone it but it's no different than alcohol. I still feel like shit about myself the next day.

Eating a McDonalds Big Mac feels so good, it's addictive. I'm actually really thin but I doubt, if Big Macs were offered to me daily, I'd be able to say no...

I don't know. I eat fast food as a last resort and generally don't enjoy the meal very much. Come on, it's disgusting meat or ingredients, hardly ever fresh and it always tastes nasty. I can see how people can become addicted to it though, it definitely makes your body crave more, even though it's obvious the meal itself wasn't very filling or good to be eating.

As a vegetarian, I have eaten my fair share of fast food. It seems counterintuitive, but when you can't eat anything else, a 7 layer burrito from Taco Bell or a shitty veggie burger from burger king is rad.
I don't think it is addictive for me because it is such a rare behavior, usually when I am wasted on alcohol at 3 am.

I no longer eat fast food and haven't for close to a decade. I'd say that in some people it can be addictive; but it was not for me.
