Is everybody addicted to something?

It's a matter of perception sure, but also seeing how much the maladaptive behavior is influencing one's life and if withdrawal has set it … which is usually during the dependency stages. Loss of control, physical withdrawals, attempts to cut down, salience and so on… How often does one need to use to cope?
When the object, whatever it is …. must come before everything else there is indeed addiction happening. Only difference is if it is mind altering or not. Caffeine isn't, and one may not be consumed thinking about it but could be agitated if he/she doesn't have it in the morning throughout the day. Gamblers and sex addicts will have withdrawals similar to physical symptoms and insomnia… created just by the mental aspects of not getting to gamble or have sex. They will sweat and shake without a substance being put into the body.

Everyone has heard about the rats that were given a choice between normal water and water with cocaine in it, in which the rats chose the cocaine water until they died?

That was while they were in shitty cages with nothing in but two water bottles.

When they built an enclosure in which there were other rats to dance and play with, plenty of space to skip and play and things to keep them mentally and physically active, they shunned the cocaine water.

No - I don't think everyone is addicted to something.. Everyone has the potential for addiction, they were just born and live with the right people in the right environment.

That's really interesting. Are you able to site that article for me? It gels with my view but I'd like to see the papers for more info.

To add my part to this thread: after dropping alcohol altogether, I've noticed I seem compelled to eat a lot and a lot of junk food. I'm now trying to kick that habit too. I will observe if it simply hops to some other manifestation. Hey, maybe if I keep stamping the addiction whack-a-mole, it'll come up as something USEFUL, like an addiction to exercise. I wouldn't mind that one.

Perhaps, yes, everybody is addicted to something.

Back when I used opiates, that was one way I rationalized it to myself. The opiated mind will do everything it can to persuade itself to stay opiated.

Saying everyone is addicted to something is an overgeneralization. A wide range of addictions, habits and rituals manifest themselves in many different ways. While some may be benign, others can be disastrous.

My problem with the question is that if the answer is yes, this could lead to justification of addiction. The more useful question is: Can anybody quit? The answer to that is yes

I agree completely, once the brain has decided it needs something its FEED ME drive doesnt matter what the something is..

One habit or addiction that really yanks on my chain is the habitual liar. One fellow in particular I know never stops and tells some tails that I think he believes to be true but they are so far fetched and elaborate that he's constantly caught in them but no one says anything because he's a big boy and conflicts with him are to be avoided. I want to tell a tale but am afraid he might out of pure coincidence read this. I'm sure others have met this type of personality and I would really like to find a way to approach him on the subject. A while back I made a comment to others at a party about how there was a law to be put in place about pretending to be in the military and he over heard me and stopped his stories about his career that most knew were false. Boy I hope he never see's this and puts two and two together. The whoppers are really something else though.
Wow, are you really that scared of this person? I feel sorry for you.

Of course, but if you're used to the taste of healthy food your body can recognise it. If something is really healthy for you to drink your body will crave it and it doesn't need to be forced into you like tap water.
No one has to "force" tap water into them, it's just water. I'm all for healthy eating/living but you come off as a little on the eccentric side with your life force talk lol.

this is my last experiment,i have a films worth of footage and answers for the effect of methadrone, the last one is pleasure obviously .i hope i can stop after today andnot get an addiction. hgave you masturbated/had sex on this drug ? can u give me any advice?
Umm... you're getting a little off topic for his thread....lol

the spiritual compulsive type is another form of programming, perhaps better than drugs … but still life can be contingent upon spiritual realm propaganda. Spiritual obsessive compulsive disorders etc. These might fit more into a ritualistic manifestations

Yes, whatever the something is atm on a timeline of drug use it what's needed at the time, no need for preferences. When I was addicted to crack, it was all I wanted. Heroin, same thing… nuthin else.

What are abstinent monks addicted to?
Meditation.

Addiction isn't the right word.
If everyone is addicted to something, that doesn't mean that all addictions are equal.

...

What, if anything, are (non domesticated) animals addicted to?

Are bees addicted to pollen?
Are sharks addicted to blood?
Are donkeys addicted to Mexican pussy?
Are feral crack-smoking monkeys addicted to crack?
