My problem with the question is that if the answer is yes, this could lead to justification of addiction. The more useful question is: Can anybody quit? The answer to that is yes

That's true. I sometimes get so tired of all this "All is relative" crap. Not everything is relative.
People who say "I don't like to talk in absolutes". What's the point? There are absolutes.

No, I think you could just as well get liberated through Gnostic Christianity. It depends what part of the world someone lives in. Buddhism hasn't always been known throughout the world like it is now.
