Don't know whether this is the right forum for this. I have an uncle in America who has severe narcolepsy and told me after visiting a sleep specialist that he's getting prescribed a powerful stimulant (he doesn't know what it is and isn't very drug savvy).

I've heard some people with severe ADHD and narcolepsy can get prescribed Desoxyn which is essentially pharmaceutical grade methamphetamine. Is this true? Is it commonly prescribed? I imagine patients who get this get a few odd glances from pharmacists.
 
You're exactly right. It is technically as legal as dexamphetamine, but it is looked down upon to the extent of getting cited if one prescribes it. No real reason for it that Vyvanse can't take care of, imo. Best this way, too.
 
Last time I looked up the figures there was only 16,000 scripts for it written annually for it in the US. That’s not 16,000 individual patients mind you. It includes repeat scripts for the same patient - so the actual number of patients could be quite a bit lower. The exact year was within the last 5 years but I cannot be assed to double check precisely.

I once had a script but only for one month. My insurance refused to cover it so it cost me over $400.

It had a dreamy/sleepy feeling to it and lacked the adrenergic push of dextroamphetamine so I switched back to dexedrine.

Except for the fact Vyvanse doesn't promote Enhanced Granule Cell Neurogeneis and White-Matter Track Remodeling:

In some regards, Desoxyn is prescribed for the elite, or more accurately, those wealthy enough to pay for it (thus not your typical American). Beyond that, it is only prescribed after many other medications have proven ineffective, which means said person has been on treatment for a fair amount of time (and has both the time and resources to do so). Additionally, the physicians that are open-minded enough to prescribe methamphetamine will be on the higher priced end of the field (you won't find a Medicaid accepting psychiatrist writing desoxyn prescriptions).

But really the truth of the matter is that methamphetamine is inferior to dextroamphetamine in the treatment of ADHD for the vast majority of cases. The pharmacodynamic profile (specifically the ratios of its actions on DA/NE/5HT) of methamphetamine makes it superior as recreational drug however.

Recently I tried fiddling with methamphetamine once again at low doses to preserve my dexedrine supply, and have found the same thing. While it certainly has superior pharmacokinetics (namely extended duration of action) and is smoother than dextroamphetamine (and causes much less irritability), I find it quite abit less focused than dextroamphetamine, and noticed a quite abit more emotionally charged comedown (mild but noticeable). Doses involved were 15mg to 80mg.

I am in the process of getting ahold of some 4-methyl-methylphenidate which I will use to cycle with the dextroamphetamine.
 
It's a last line defence, and given the stigmatization of methamphetamine I imagine it's seldom prescribed relative to the more regular addedrall and vyvanse. It's also prescribed for bunge eating disorder. 5mg or 10mg dose. Here in Canada it isn't prescribed whatsoever.

ADHD aside, Methamphetamine promotes Enhanced Neurogenesis, Neurogenesis being the formation of new Neurons in the Brain. The formation of new Neurons in the Brain could be viewed as "Growing one's Brain" correct?

Like, dextroamphetamine/vyavanse/ritalin/adderall don't promote enhanced neurogenesis, correct? That's soley a (Low-Dose) Methamphetamine phenomenon, correct?

No it absolutely is not unique to methamphetamine. Low doses of dextroamphetamine and methylphenidate will promote neurogenesis as well. It is well-described.

If you were truly using a therapeutic of methamphetamine one would think you'd already be aware of the literature 🤔

Do you have any references? I have only seen studies looking at relationship between brain volume (in different areas) and stimulants in ADHD children and non-ADHD rats.

The most recent literature suggests in non-ADHD rats neurogenesis does occur but is short-lived as the mew neurons die fairly quickly. In ADHD children long term use of ADHD meds seems to reduce brain volume in key areas.

However it appears that a lot or studies in this area are low quality or have ambigious results. This quite recent open access paper includes data from several meta-analyses - but nothing about neurogenesis effects of stim use on non-ADHD subjects. However, it does infer that there might be differences in the possible positive effects between stimulant-naive subjects and experienced users which suggests the horse has already bolted for Acklac7.

It should be noted that I rampantly, rampantly rampantly rampantly abused adderall/adhd medications for well over a decade before going on low-dose meth and accomplishing every last thing I ever wanted to in life: I'm not sure if I would throw in the towel just yet. I'm fairly certain Low-Doses of Meth repaired damage done by abusing said stimulants, as weird as it may sound. If you're implying my mind is gone beyond repair, I don't neccesairly think I would agree with that statement - at least not yet. I mean 3 months ago I was doing absolutely phenomenal at work on low-dose Meth. Absolutely phenomenal. That said, it's sort of hard for me to keep it togeather as of late after everything I've been through, especially given the fact I've been without a psychiatrist for well over a year now and have been completely out of a few of my key meds for months.

To answer OP's question, I've seen a few people in threads here over the years claim to be prescribed it. It is quite rare and only used when everything else fails as methamphetamine is (obviously) a highly addictive substance that becomes far more dangerous than any of the other ADHD meds when misused. It seems to anecdotally lead to far more mental instability, mania, and abuse than traditional ADHD medications. Few doctors are aware that it is prescribeable and even fewer are comfortable prescribing it in any cases.

I made a name for myself in a Major Worldwide Corporation - Something I once never thought possible. I just never thought I would make it in the Corporate world, it scared me, and it was all my Dad ever wanted me to accomplish in life. And then without really even trying I accomplished it. On Meth (Low-Dose Meth)

And then of course I went on to make another name for myself at the CIA - but nobody believes me on that one, le sigh...
