So for my case : I am on a Venlafaxine (Effexor) 150 mgs daily treatment and i use ganja daily and sometimes i happen to binge on codeine : 300 mgs per sesh and sometimes redosing. Being before that an opiate naive, i figured out, that in comparison to other stronger and more potent opiates, oral codeine won't grip too much to me physically speaking (after psychological addiction is another thing) : the Effexor should cancel out any small codeine withdrawals during the next days. It's too early for me to go deeper in the opiate/opioid familly so i'm just seeing you guys advice on semi chronic codeine use (half the week or so) ?

Half a week will not cause any codeine withdrawals. Once you hit a week of regular use thats when you will start feeling it if you stop. I don't know anything about effexor so can't help you with that being a help. You mention being opiate naive but binging on codeine... how long have you been doing this for? And do you actually WANT to work up to stronger opiates? I also hope your not ingesting that much codeine that is mixed with anything else like paracetamol.

Oh and half a week is acute not chronic or semi chronic.

codeine phosphate or methylmorphine is indeed physically addictive .. ..

I have been addicted for 5 full years now. Its OTC over here in costa rica

one of the reasons why i moved here from texas

hope this helped

Yeah it's OTC where i live too : 300 mgs codeine phosphate in a small vial, being an opiate naive before i still managed to do perfectly fine on it even with 600 mgs a day once !! Are these dosages safe for a new usage? (Non toxic? Because at the moment i have no direct issues at all, not even allergic to it).

And indeed my effexor is there to back up any codeine secondary effects... Does Dxm lower codeine tolerance too? (Or maybe Dxm only works on some opiates..)

Last weekend (with little tolerance to these meds) i was chillen on 15 mgs Xanax (48 hours) + 300 mgs Codeine a day + loads of Ganja... and my body did fine (although the memories of these times are small haha)

You didn't answer my question, is the codeine mixed with anything else? Also you're wasting your time taking 600mgs codeine has a ceiling dose of 400mgs anything above that does nothing more for you and is a waste.

If you've already taken them safely then it should be clear that they are non toxic, starting at such a high does is a stupid thing to do to your tolerance though, seeing as a lower dose would have gotten you high being opiate naive.

I don't think anything lowers your tolerance except not using. How often are you using?

If you make a habit of regularly using any opioid, even codeine, there will be a withdrawal when you stop. Codeine w/d's are apparently pretty mild as things go, however.

lo-ol

ummm any opioid or opiate are physically addicting .... morphine it's a fact

Opiates are a true definition of Narcotic

and Narcotics are uuum addicting ( { physically ] }

Only codeine phosphate (no paracetamol or anything like that, maybe some glucose because it comes in drops : 13,6 mg (codeine) * 30 g liquid = 408 mg of codeine actually )

Sometimes for 3 days in a row i take 400 mgs codeine daily then stop for a week (maybe while being busy doing at bit of other drugs : dxm, k or else..)

And that's my point about the codeine withdrawal for an opiate naive being mild, and the AD effexor (venlafaxine) curing it anyway :)

I understood that codeine was just metabolized into morphine by a ratio of approximately 10:1. If I'm wrong disregard this post. If I'm right though, this would mean that typical opiate withdrawal syndrome should be expected. I don't have a lot of personal experience with codeine, but I've read that there's a ceiling dose. I've also seen that theory disputed.

To answer the original question though, developing a full-blown codeine addiction in league with heroin or other stronger opiates doesn't seem likely. Realistically, your codeine use could provoke you into using stronger opiates once your tolerance is raised sufficiently. I've heard that heroin can be pretty addictive ;)

For most users, does DXM significantly slow tolerance from developing in the case of codeine (or in my case seem to prevent and/or decrease tolerance or potentiate the effects of opioids generally)? Yes.

The search engine is your friend

Regarding w/d, I find the body aches and physical effects of w/d to be more sever with a long standing codeine habit than I did my heroin habit(s). Kind like with morphine too... Could have just been me though. I love codeine, but I HATE how short lived the high is, and how it dissipates so quickly after the peak ... boo

And if you're using NMDA antagonists in between codeine binges, during the time you'd ostensibly be in w/d, if only mildly, well, you're basically avoiding w/d all together. I stumbled onto this too... That's at least my experience - that NMDA antagonists (especially DXM in my case) all one to avoid having to suffer more or less all the nasty side effects of w/d - or at least it makes the w/d infinitely more bearable).

Just check out the links in that search query I posted, particularly this one.

DXM might help slow the development of tolerance but it doesn't outright prevent it.

The fact of the matter is that if you use codeine every day, you will inevitably build both a tolerance and a physical addiction.

Yeah it is addictive I use it from time to time when I have to since it is OTC in my location.

I wish we could get pure codeine drops here in canada, gotta make due with cwe i guess. Can you explain how effexor lessens withdrawal? i am on 75mg/day and am interested in this.

I would assume it would be because of Effexor's SNRI actions. I think I read somewhere that SSRI's can lessen withdrawal from opioids. Tramadol also has these SNRI properties.

I think Effexor might actually worsen withdrawal IMO. I know that it makes me feel like shit in general, and I can't imagine how a norepinephrine boost would feel during an opioid withdrawal.

Codeine is just as physically addicting as other opioids taken orally at equipotent doses in good metabolizers. Some would disagree with me, but an opiate is an opiate. However, half a week of continuous use of almost any opioid will not cause physical wd's when the codeine is discontinued in normal individuals who have no history of opiate addiction.

Effexor is an ssri >150mg only at doses above 150 does it act as an snri.Tramadol has ssri properties.

I stand corrected. You are very right. Also though, perhaps venlafaxine's interactions with opioid receptors might play a part, indirect or not.
