Is carisoprodol(soma) a GABAa type drug?

My question is, does carisoprodol activate the same receptors in the brain as benzodiazepines do? If not, which does it activate?

Last question is, is it dangerous to mix soma with any opioid drugs, mainly buprenorphine?

Thanks for any help.

according to this study, carisoprodol and it's metabolite mepbromate affect the brain similarly to barbiturates, but with some differences. It does not bind to the benzodiazepine site though.

it could be dangerous, but I have no experience with carisoprodol in combination with opioids.

P.S. both barbiturates and benzos are GABA-A agonists. There are many sub-recpetors of GABA-A though.

hmm i see, yeah i was wondering if carisoprodol affected those same receptors basically?

and about second question, i know soma potentiates opioids, but was wondering if there are any counteractions with buprenorphine and soma.

You can safely combine Soma with any opiate as long as you are not opiate naive & have taken Soma before by itself. First time I took a 7.5/750 vicodin with 1 Soma, I was really high for several hours, it rocked me.

thx for responses.

so now my question is, is meprobamate still scripted today? and is it worthwhile as a recreational muscle relaxant like carisoprodol is?

meprobamate IS carisoprodol. Carisoprodol gets metabolized into it in your body. And yes meprobamate is still scripted, but rarely.

Yes, I realize that carisoprodol is a pro-drug to meprobamate, but was wondering if just meprobamate was scripted itself.

Did you even read what I said? What was different about me posting "And yes meprobamate is still scripted, but rarely. " and him posting "It is a grandfathered drug. So, it is, but very rarely. "

Whatever dude.

I've taken soma with bupe many times and honestly never even noticed it, I guess I didn't take enough. It helps a little bit if I'm running low on benzos and have to lower my dose so yeah it has some sort of GABA activity.
