Iran threatened Saturday to allow the transit of illegal drugs through its territory to Europe if the West continues to criticize the Islamic nation for its practice of executing drug traffickers.

Mohammad Javad Larijani, the head of Iran's High Council for Human Rights, said Iran was sacrificing blood in fighting drug trafficking and suggested it is unfair that it is then condemned by the West for executing smugglers.

"Westerners have to either be Iran's partner in the fight against drug traffickers or we must think otherwise and, for instance, allow the transit" of drugs across Iranian territory, Larijani said in a comment posted on the judiciary's website Saturday.

He said such a move would reduce the number of overall executions in Iran by 74 per cent, "but the way will be paved for the smuggling of narcotics to Europe."

U.N. officials have in the past warned that a "heroin tsunami" could hit Europe if the drug interdiction by Iran is weakened.

Iran can't even keep control of heroin addiction in their own country, don't they have one of the highest heroin addiction rates in the world? I doubt their 'allowing of transit' would create a 'heroin tsunami' ..

Iran does has a huge population of addicts but considering that they execute traffickers I'm sure they are keeping down the supply from what it would be otherwise.

nah it just makes the profit margin that much bigger for the people who get into the game. Can't have a huge heroin problem without huge amounts of heroin lol like 'drug war' efforts globally, they are futile. More empty threats from a broken nation run by a psychopathic moron.

yeah they have a pretty big problem, my theory is that we went into afghanistan to restore the opium business, to help pump more heroin and opium into iran, crippling them basically to allow an easier attack/revolution etc. i wonder how their usage rates have changed since the 2001 invasion of afghan.

All wars in the Middle East are over one, some, or all of these resources: Oil, Heroin, Marijuana, and the privitization of natural resources.

The Middle East is well on it's way to becoming the next South America. Completely sold off and raped by massive American & European banks & corporations. The Middle East is just putting up more of a fight.

Maybe North Korea could pump its new heroin through Iran. If so that UK heroin shortage could be a thing of the past.

Heroin headed to Europe regularly goes through Iran... Iran in fact has the highest percentage of heroin addicts anywhere.

The heroin is going to flow through Iran either way... It has for years and will continue to do so. The government is just ridiculous all of the time, nothing they say is actually rational.

I just read an article about how they don't really want to get rid of the drug death penalty, as it's used as somewhat of a catchall to execute others. So that 74% figure isn't really all for drugs. :|
