Iodine: Why You Need It, why You Can't Live Without it by Dr David Brownstein is a must-read.
Iodine may be the most important element that nobody really knows about. One could even argue that the information has been suppressed. Iodophobia, a misguided fear of iodine, plagues many doctors. Step 1 would be finding an iodine-knowledgeable doctor that can conduct an iodine loading test, and begin supplementing with something similar to Lugol's solution (potassium iodide + elemental iodine) AFTER one has thoroughly done their own research.
It's estimated at least one-third of the population are iodine-deficient yet every one of our cells require this essential micro-nutrient. Iodine concentrates in the thyroid, breasts and prostate (areas where we are witnessing pandemics of cancer). Iodine is displaced in our bodies by environmental toxins such as bromide, pesticides, and food additives. Iodine detoxifies the toxic halides - fluoride, bromide and chloride from the body. Iodine increases urinary excretion of heavy metals such as lead and mercury.
The US RDA is 150µg (0.15mg). This was an established calculation based on how much iodine the thyroid gland needs to avoid goiter. Other organs' requirements aren't factored into this number. Japanese people consume roughly 100x the RDA in their diets. It's estimated that people suffering from serious conditions may require 12-50mg(!). Research shows that healthy individuals need 1-3 mg/day as a maintenance dose which is still well above the RDA.
During supplementation, hydration is important. Depending on the health of the individual, one should expect detox symptoms. To aid detox the suggested supplement plan is as follows:
1/2 to 1 tsp of sea salt in a tall glass of water upon arising.
Lugol's (start with lowest dose) after breakfast or meals, don't take it after 4pm (it energizes you).
200 mg of B2 (riboflavin) per day. Can be taken in two doses with your lugols.
1000 mg of B3 (niacinamide) taken in two doses with lugols.
200 mcg selenium (not more!) ONCE a day with morning dose.
3 to 10 grams of vitamin C - divide into two doses taken an hour after lugols.
500 mg of magnesium - glycinate is excellent - taken at night.
Protect the liver with NAC, ALA and/or milk thistle.
There is legit evidence that iodine-deficiency is related to poor neurological development and low-IQ scores in children. It makes sense that if a pregnant mother is deficient then the newborn will definitely be. Iodine is especially important for women trying to get pregnant and women of childbearing age. Females generally require a higher dose than males.
