Mod Note: Hey, we dont really allow Intervention threads in here. they belong in the Film and TV Discussion, technically, but so many ppl is always making them that we finally allowed ONE thread for discussion of the show. For now Ima leave this open for a little while, becuz its a different topic than the "general" intervention thread, but Ima merge it with that one in a day or so, so enjoy it now. But anybody readin this, please remember: NO INTERVENTION THREADS IN DRUG CULTURE PLEASE!!!

So I'm sitting here watching intervention... and I thought of this website. It seems as if some of us have had huge struggles with addiction and everything that comes with it... but when I watch this show it seems that everything is over-exaggerated for TV.

Granted it may seem this way because we get the full story and get to see all the people that are actually being affected by the addiction, which I don't see here.

I read peoples posts and I feel like the majority of the people that are involved in BL are functioning users in society or are ex-addicts trying to lend a hand. People on these forums(for the most part) have informational/intelligent things to say and don't seem to be anything like the addicts you see on Intervention.

Has this thought ever crossed anyone elses mind? Am I just bias because I use? Am I really missing the whole point? I've been through a substantial amount(IMO) because of opiates. (Probation, Jail, Loss of friends/family members, loss of trust etc. etc) Most of which is behind me now. Anyone else agree with me?

I definitely understand what you're saying, but you also have to consider that the people on the show are not a random sampling of addicts. They're the ones that are bad enough to first get written about to the network and then get approved by the network for a show.

The anonymity of the internet can bring out the worst and the best in people, and alot of Bluelight is the best in people who are otherwise living very hard lives. For some, helping others who are headed down a familiar path may feel both cathartic and redemptive.

I think that if we had a totally anonymous survey about a lot of the things you listed (which are considered serious and life-affecting consequences), alot more BL'ers might identify than you think.

^^Very true. I pretty much left out the thought about the network selecting the worst of the worst addicts.. and even so... There is probably worse out there.

I think the BL community is an awesome group of people, and the sad thing is the rest of the world (non-users to be exact) would look at this site in disgust. Not ALL non-users but the majority. Its just strange how the world is so divided on its outlook regarding users. I've heard conversations regarding clinics that give out free needles and the people conversing were just in disgust. I look at it like... atleast they're going to be doing it safely. God knows that a dirty needle won't stop every single user from shooting.

It's entertainment. Who wants to see a bunch of informed, play it smart types? Certainly not the American TV audience. They want the uber-junkie types who will rob pocketbooks on TV. It's like watching the "Jersey Shore" on MTV and being like "Anyone else think this is over the top or is this how NJ folks act normally?". Of course it's not, they picked the most drama-bound, outlandish folks they could. It's entertainment...

plus the addicts on the show have usually been addicted for 5+ years. I don't know how legit that is ut they seem to handpick the worst cases for more entertainment

The producers intentionally pick people with real bad addictions. The show is emotional pornography, and the more fucked up the addicts are, the more entertaining it is. Not to mention that they edit a few months into one hour, so you're seeing the addict's lowest moments. Intervention is an accurate portrayal of addiction in the same way The Real World is true to real life--its real, but dramatized.

Yet at the same time, I can identify with the show. Personally I did some things I'm not proud of at least in part due to my addiction, and I know that when you're hooked you're in denial and don't see yourself how you really are. I was a fairly high-functioning addict, doing very well in college while on lots of opiates...I think a lot of Bluelighters are intelligent and relatively responsible users who might fall under this category rather than homeless street "junkies" and "criminals" (I hate using those words). But even though my addiction never got as bad as many, I sure as hell wouldn't want to relive video of my lowest moments in that time period. Intervention is over-the-top, but most addicts can relate to it.

Did anybody see the recent episode with the Asian woman who was doing a shitload of Fentanyl and had all these paranoid delusional beliefs about electromagnetism harming her? Now that episode was over the top. Good entertainment though.

That woman was certifiable. Laypeople probably think that it was the fentanyl that fucked her up, but if I remember correctly when she sobered up she was diagnosed with a delusional disorder. The fent was probably some form of self-medication.

I'd agree with your emotional pornography comment, its a pretty succinct way to sum it up. It doesnt necessarily make it a bad thing though, despite the entertainment value, it really does help people. If I remember correctly, it has a 75% success rate for sobriety 2 years post-intervention (this may have been 1 year.) I'm most impressed by Jeff VanVonderen, he really seems to know just what to say and how to approach people.

To continue my A&E drama rant--if intervention is vanilla emotional porn, the hoarders is some bizarre japanese tentacle rape porn. That show is just terrible, disgusting, and almost NO ONE on the show is actually successful. Their whole "let them make all the decisions approach" is simply not compatible with "we're moving 45 metric tons of shit in 3 days" policy.

I dont know how yall are sayin they pick the worst addicts for these shows...most of the episodes I seen features people who really dont have that much bad of habits at all. Anybody using as little as most of them did in their addictions would be considered a real newjack kind of like "new" user where Im at. The behaviors they show that is so negative is usually becuz of other shti not related to their addictions, and it just makes them look more fucked up even tho in reality it aint from the drugs doin it. Iunno, it just seems lame to me that they think these ppl with very small, pretty controllable habits is so terribly addicted and make them look so over the top when they really aint. They are TV addicts, not 'real' addicts, at least thats how it look to me. they never get down n dirty with it other than once in a while like with that Cristy girl, but that wasnt even a dopehead and that is who I am talkin abotu mostly, opiate addicts.

All the dopeheads I seen on there uses like, baby-habit amounts of dope and aint even really that bad. They just realy over exaggerate how bad the habits is. That one kid that was addictd to shootin OC's and his mom gave him 40 bux to go get right?? If he can get right off of doin 40 bux worth of OC's his habit cant be that bad, becuz we all know that the average price for the highest dose OC's is around that amount and sometimes ten or twenty dollars more. (we dont post prices here, and I aint gonna specifically name shit, but just fort the sake of this discussion Im pointin that out.) I mean come on if you can get right with that little OC how bad is your habit really? I aint dicksizing, but im just bein objective. I been clean off dope almost 6 months now, and used OC at one point during this clean time, after not dosing my methadone for 2 days beforehand, and did 200 mg and did not even catch a nod or a noticeable high. doin 80mg was verry slight and subtle feeling but nothin near a high and if i had been sick, it wouldnt of made me better. And that is for somebody who aint a addict at all, and dont even USE, like ever. So if he is a daily addict, he must have a pretty low tolerance to be gettin right off 40 bux of OC, and "bad" addicts aint got such low tolerances, thats all Im sayin.

I feel like they dramatize the shit so much, and its retarded becuz I knwo ppl includin myself who used waaaaaay more dope than any of the ppl i ever seen on that shit, and they make the ppls on the show look sooo terrible and horribly addicted and out of control with such huge habits, OMG!! And its like damn, if yall think these people with these little bitchass habits is so bad, wtf would yall think of me and my friends?

And the interventionists is straight up DOUCHEBAGS! They are seriously retarded...They ignorant as fuck, idk where they learned their intervention schoolin from but it musta been a program that aint updated their info in the past 15 years or some shit . Or maybe they just got taught by their local NA chapter 8) But I would never even stay in the room if i got sat down with one of them assholes. No fuckin way would I let them bully me into goin to quit, ESPECIALLY IF I WASNT READY!!! Dont they fuckin UNDERSTAND that people aint gonna get clean and STAY clean if they aint ready??! You cant force somebody into that! It aint a choice, its a reaction that eventually takes place and comes over you at some time in your use, and it aint even a conscious decision. It just "clicks" when you are ready , and you know its real. You cant just say Oh i think i wanna get clean now and wait for the motivation to hit you, an djust go do a program and be fine. No it needs to be a REAL change that come from inside you, deep down, and it takes root and grows in your mind and body and thats when you ready. Not when some dickhead wannabe savior tricks me into walkin into a room of my family and guilting me and then pressuring me to leave, on the spot, right now, to go to rehab. IM honestly suprised at how many of the addicts on there says yes to the intervention. I guess they dont get the money if they dont say yes or somethin. cuz seriously, I would NOT take too well to that , and i dont know nobody that would, neither. Its jus sickening to me how its all "OK" for them to peer pressure the addicts, but they talk so much shit about people who use drugs around the addict and "pressure" him or her to keep gettin high instaed of encouragin them to get clean. Its mad hypocritical. I hate the show, ony time i ever watched it was when I coudl shoot dope while wwatching it, ha ha assholes. Other than that, never....Way too much, super self righteous, uppity, holier than thou mutha fuckas preaching to somebody who aint even really addicted that bad and makin it sound like they on some deaths-door shit just becuz they shoot dope every other day, damn.

Not only that, but the majority of the people has had all these fucked up type situations in their lifes becuz they are STUPID, and aint got no idea of harm reduction or responsiblity. Almost every episode is about some upper middle class person or a person who is fairly well off money wise. I aint seen many of them from poor or ghetto families who is really suffering financially. Its these kids who has money and been raised by permissive parents who dont know how to keep their kids in check, and enable and give them money then come bitchin and cryin when their kids grow up to be junkies and rob them blind for their dope money. and the kids go out and do all this foolish, dumbass shit cuz they never got a good beating as a child and never learned shit about how to act , and they go out actin all crazy, straight up wilin out for the cameras and shit to show how "bad" their habits is, but half the time it aint even that they doin or have to do it becuz of they habit, its just that they are attention seekers who dont or wont take advantage of their situation in life bein a pretty comfortable one, and instead they go out and try an act like they some kind of badass outlaw junkie when they come home every night to a nice, plush, cushy bed and happy family in a nice middle class housing development .

It jus pisses me off- I dont think i ever seen any person who is a "real" junkie and by that i mean a person who seems like a real person not someone fronting for the camera and tryin to make themself look "bad" , and of course the show producers is tryna make them look bad too, it aint just the addicts. But I aint seen nobody who is really deep in, suffering, using insane amounts of dope/watever, broke, out on the run, livin in they car, about to get locked up and go to jail, etc etc etc...its always this kind of stereotypical "nice girl/guy" addict, from wat I seen. Now I admit i aint seen alot of episodes. And alot of the ppl who is alcoholics , or addicts of shti that aint heroin or meth or crack, they are real over the top, but its nutz becuz other than the alcohol, they aint even on drugs that really hooks you! I mean the DXM kid--come the fuck on!!! And the alcoholics, who aint seen that before, come on that aint even interesting to watch. And wat about the 'RAGE ADDICT" they had on there? Or the eating disorder chick?? Shits weak! they just tryna sensationalize everything, make everything into some kind of dramatic-ass addiction. its straight dumb.

I wannna see junkies like I use to be on there, fuckin, hustling Boost minutes on the corner in paterson, pushin bricks to the suburban junkies, goin into paterson 2 or 3 times a day sometimes. Smoking crack in the car on the drive back up route 80 while they shoot up in the car. people booting 8, 9 , 10 bags in one shot, doin 5, 6 shots a day with 7 bags in the shot, people who destroy a brick in barely a day n a half. People who walk up and down the hottest blocks in the hood, corners where you can buy mac-10's from the gun runners who stands out there with the dope boys. people shoootin up in bathrooms in the hood, people shooting up crouched behind buildings and shit, getting the water from their shot by holdin a bottle cap outside the window and catchin rain in it cuz they aint got no money to buy some water and so sick they aint got time to drive til they can find a bathroom to get some water from. That straight reckless shit, people who really is in it to win it. (lol win, yea right) bUt you feel me?

None of this "Now, Nicole will drive over to her boyfriends house, who has purchased heroin for both of them, and will inject it to get high. He buys it from a local dealer, who he meets at a local fast food parking lot. The deal is risky, but Nicole and her boyfriend do watever it takes to stay high." and then they show her use like, 3 bags of dope over the entire night, and it says "Her counselor said if nicole contineus to use like this, she will be dead in a year. The counselor said that Nicole's problem is one of the worst she has ever seen. At one time, Nicole used TEN BAGS A DAY-a amount known as a "bundle" on the streets. Most users would not even do a bundle in three days, but nicole finished it in one. Though this may be suprising, many users do reach this stage of use. Long time junkies and addicts sometimes even use more than this--up to fifteen bags a day. Using such large amounts is the last resort of the lifetime, hopeless heroin addict. When she first began using, nicole never thought she would become one. After 10 months of IV heroin use, she now needs up to 4 bags to get her "well" when she is "dope sick." She spends up to 120 dollars a day to get a "bundle", which will only keep her "well" for two days if she's lucky, but most times its gone by the end of the day, even when she tells herself she is gonna make it last this time."

Like, yea , OK, the fact that she still pays that much for a bundle which is almost triple how much it should be, just goes to show how much of a "noob" she is, becuz any "real" junkie cant afford that much for that little dope and will start to go cop theyself and get the real normal prices cuz they cant afford to put up with that overcharged taxed the hell up shit. On the show, They always like to say, Oh, so and so uses TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS A DAY worth of heroin, but the person uses like a bundle, and the only reason it cost so much is becuz they overpay cuz they suburban bitches who dont even go cop, or they live in like vermont or some shti where its hard to find. they say anything they canto make it look extreme. like thes ppl aint got no idea of wat ppl really use, u know? I aint gonna keep ranting, but the shit is lame. Any time I see thes how, i find my self say, damn, they think THIS is BAD??? If only they did a show on ME! Haha, they would be shittin their pants if they seen how much I was usin everyday, and I know ppl that uses even more than I do! Ha, these ppl dont knwo shit!

LOL, yo lace you cracked me the fuck up with them last two paragraphs yo lmao. That's so true ahahaha like you ever seen the episode with the two twin brothers in the fuckin rich ass suburban neighborhood and there parents are just fucking hopeless pushovers and there both sellin tar and smoking it lol. Im watching the show like wtf this shit is weak. Im bout 150 bang out shots filled with anywhere from 7-10 bags, and i still dont even get high like i used to, i find myself thinking to myself damn i done did enough dope to kill ten normal non dope users tonite and ive ODed more times than I can count. Lol the real addicts are too fuckin bad to be gettin intervented on i guess.

Good post Lacey, you're right about most of the addicts living of someone else (ie. parents, boyfriend, ect...) Sooooo right about they're random 'facts': "If Danielle continues to smoke crack at this rate, her lungs with collapse and cardiac arrest with ensue..."

Way dramatized

On another note, I LOL'd at one episode: Junkie finds a prostitute at the bar and requests blowjob (expecting the show crew to pay for it). He gets his blow job and realizes they won't pay for it. The whore calls up her pimp who comes down, slaps him up, and takes his Ipod. LOL Thanks Intervention...

Addiction isn't always measured in milligrams, bundles and bricks yano 8)

I've enjoyed a lot of your posts on BL, but I this is pretty much crazy. That you consider that post to be an "objective" view is funny and sad at the same time because it is so far beyond any reasonable frame of reference.

I don't doubt for a minute that your addictions/experiences/problems/etc was/are/and will be a lot worse than most people on that show. That doesn't normalize their problems, and it doesn't change the fact that in almost all of the cases, their addictions were only maintained at the direct physical and emotional cost of those around them, which is, perhaps, what addiction should really be measured by.

All that notwithstanding, I have to give you that the post was enjoyable to read for its humor and tone ;)

Yo, Im here on a harm reduction site. I dont encourage ppl to use large amt's of drugs. I dont think its a good thing. It aint cool, its pitiful. I was a pathetic wreck when i was doin shit like that.

But when they put people on there whose addictions are barely even addictions to begin with, and is more like the early stages of dependence, people who aint even nowhere near the depths that addiction can bring a person to, its doin a terrible dis service to the drug addicts who really is in it.

Why?

Becuz people watch these shows and see these kids who is barely even addicted, or who has this tiny-ass habit of like 3 bags a day and they make it out like these kids is horribly, awful, over the top, gonna die if they dont stop soon, end of the line, hopeless addicts. And then, when they hear of somebody who is ACTUALLY in a "bad" addiction and does the amounts that most of us junkies do, that gives them a idea like "wow, they told me that the kid on intervention was a horrible horrible junkie who was days away from death becuz of his super extreme habit. Well, this kid I know is doin THIRTY bags a day! OMG! Thats ten times the amount of the kid on intervention He must be the WORST ADDICT EVAR!!! Im callin his mom and tellin her that hes a heroin addict, and hes gonna DIEEEEE!"

When using that much dope is pretty much the average for ppl lie me who has been using 5+ years. Go read the stamp thread. Guaranteed you will see that. The people who been banging dope for multiple years usually does abotu 20-30 bags a day, and many times more. IM saying that a "average" habit is around 25 bags a day for "real" junkies-carreer dope feens who has been in the game a minute.

Its all good n all when a person is just using for their first year and still can be good with a little under a bundle a day. Im just saying that objectively based on averages and the standard average amount that most longer term junkies use, that is below average, and when a person is usin bags in single digit amount, that is a very small habit compared to most users. it IS objective , at least for here in NJ, and the places where we get stamp bags for affordable prices.

I aint tryna minimize nobody struggle. Or say addiction is only addiction if you use this amount or w/ever. But im just pointin out that I cant f-in STAND when ppl exaggerates a drug habit and makes it out like a person whose using baby, beginner amounts, is some kind of seasoned veteran junkie whose at the end of the road and wont make it much longer using such "crazy" amounts.

U got to understand, my problem aint with the fact that the ppl is using less than most. Its just that the show producers is always increasin it and makin it look like a bigger problem than it is to make the show more dramatic.

Be real yo-A person whose usin 5 bags a day is most likely gonna be less deeper in the game and be easier able to get out the game than someone using 5 times that amount. Sure, the person usin 25 bags might have more strenth and willpower, and maybe that 5 bag a day kid is a total complete hopeless person who just wants to die and just dont fuckin care no more and refuses to get clean. Different shit affects people different ways. Somebodys dog might die and they a emotional wreck and get suicidal over it, others father might die and they just work thru it. Suffering aint objective and who am I to judge anybody pain. I get it. But i am just pointin out to you that the ppl on this show often AINT extremes at all--And by the producers tryna show them and portray them as that, it makes the rest of us drug users look even worse, u feel me?

If ppl watches that shit and gets it in their head that some low-ass amount of a drug is a extreme "really bad addiction" amount of drug to use, then they gettin a distorted view and when a person with a regular average-ass habit comes around it makes that person look like a crazy insane freak with a death wish becuz everybodys standard of "bad" is set so low. Any and all addiction can be bad for a person. Its all how they treat it and react to it and how it effect them. For sure, I think we all understand that shit. But Im jus sayin, there IS objectiveness to some level and i think to say that the amounts u use aint got nothin at all to do with it is over simplifyin shit and makin it way too subjective. Addiction is addition but like we all heard before --"HAve you ever sucked dick for WEED?!?!?" There is some truth to the idea that there is different levels of addictions and some aint as bad as others and while the bad effects it has on a persons life got alot to do with it, the amounts they abusing does also go into the final answer aswell. And these shows paints a picture of extreme, sensationalized shit that just aint true its all exaggeration and shock and alienates the ppl watchin the show who does know wats up.

Not only that but we all know how retarded some drug counselors can be and they watch that kinda shit. These interventionist people, they drug counselors. They work with real people, and we got real people who needs help, talkin to these fool-asses who believe these small habits is some outta control deaths door type of shit, so its puttin it in peoples heads, the people who should be treating and helping, that these "normal" addicts is actually super bad and it just all over is mad negative and damaging to the idea of the scale of addiction and makes a big deal outta nothing. Logic like that is how you get the people tellin you that if you drink one beer everyday you a alcoholic becuz its everyday use so its abuse. And shit like that. when the counselors and ppl who is supposed to be helping, is spreadin and believin such wrong ideas as that they aint able to help the ppl who needs help in the best way they can if they workin with wrong information.

Hope that helps u get behind an understand a lil better where Im comin from. Thanks for ur post

I didn't read through this entire thread, but I agree that most the people on intervention are not the worst of the worst addicts and most of the show is over dramatized for ratings and for its targeted audience. Some of the junkies on the show were pretty bad though and did get pretty down and dirty. A few that comes to mind is the the one homeless guy from San Diego who had the the long dirty beard who was using toilet water to muscle tar into his thighs, the chick in Baltimore who was turning tricks in the hood and fixing speedballs into her neck in the alleyway, and the son of the lead singer from 3 dog night who ended up in jail for stealing a car to support his habit. But yeah, a lot of the people on intervention just have serious mental problems in my opinion.

Ha, these ppl dont knwo shit!

u make some good points but they can all be "muted" by the fact that it is tv. it can be dramatized for ratings.

like the suburban kid who got 40 from his mom? it doesn't mean 40 is the only $ he got. later in the episode he was kicked out of rehab for buying dope in LA, so he obvisously wasn't just using oxy. maybe the theme of the episode was addiction could happen to suburban kids who only use pills. doesn't mean his addiction wasn't "strong".

yes the interventions are forced and often unsuccesful but they're waht make the whole show... what'd u expect if there wasn't an intevention and they just let the people go and say no without trying there wouldn't be a show... but the method does work sometimes (like the huffing chick) so it isn't pointless.

you complain that the show is filled with rich suburban kids, but don't you think that a lot of addicts are exactly that? how many kids in the ghetto see drug addiction kill lives and stay away from that shit. how many kids in the 'burbs see that? you act like just cause it's suburban kids it isn't realy. and it isn't just rich kids, often times it's about people who had poor parents with drug addiction who lived in shit. one of is even about a bum who shoots in weird places cause his veins are all fucked up. another dopehead (joey) shot like 15 bags a day.

yes i can agree that alcohol addictions aren't even interesting for me, but the dxm kid was addicting. u can't lie that there aren't people like that who take dxm daily (http://www.drugs-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=103331), the kid was taking atleast 1 kg of dxm a day, but the episode was definetly interesting. but again it is tv so the only reason they're probably doing this is for ratings. so does that mean u dont' watch anything on tv. cause i can guarantee that everything on tv is only there for profit...

u also complain cause the show the addicts hustlin 24/7. but honestly how many of those blocks would allow someone to come film them. i woudln't know but if i was selling dope on a block or running guns i wouldn't let some camera guy follow junkies on my block filming me. a lot of shit u just don't see on the show because it can't be obtained, isn't interesting, w/e. it's the editor choice what to have and i'm sure they got good reasons for not showing parts. when u were hustling bricks would u let yourself get filmed doing it?

just cause they show nicole only using 3 bags doesn't mean she only used 3, because it isn't interesting watching a person shoot up a bag 10 times, 3 is enough. prices are probably exaggerateed a lil cause it is somewhat harm reduction.

just cause an addict doesn't use as much doesn't mean their addiction is as bad or worse than yours. i've never heard of addiction being measured by amount of drugs used.

get back to me.

I agree with a lot of what you said. Granted I have not seen anything close to the likes of anything in Patterson, NJ. Generally people I was around were doing prescription Opiates. Few hundred mgs of OC a day was the habit. Route of admin was always intranasal as well. So I dont know much about the heroin/crack aspect(I've done both) but I just was never involved in it in tougher neighborhoods. I would have NO clue how to score H on the street and I would never even attempt it.

The Interventionists are so lame. I don't like anyone of them.

lacey k your posts were inspirational!
haha could you imagine if it was you they were intervening? CATCH ME IF YOU CAN! theyd have to chase me all over the city. i'd kill someone for doing that to me. way to put my face out there so the cops know me.

but....i sometimes wish i was that person(not really on the show tho). it always seems my habit is so much worse than the ones on tv. and like lacey said before the girl doin 3 bags and how bad her habit was...WTF? oh and as of lately i havent seen any i'm-hooked-on-dope-interventions on tv. i'm so over that show.

read the second post i made. you missed that one. somebody else said the same shit as u and i responded to them...:)...my point is that alot of the ppl they show as bein so bad is really just normal. Like "joey" or who ever whou said bootn 15 bags a day-thats a pretty average habit yo. thats all im sayin,

I hear you, definitely. The producers/corporate hacks don't care about anything but good entertainment=money. The thing is, they don't just randomly collect drug addicts off of the street for the show. The people they have to choose from are the people whose families contact them. One could imagine that this provides a pretty limited sample of people, one that would definitely lean toward those in early stages of addiction who haven't burned their bridges to the point where their family has written them off.

The extent/danger/damage/magnitude that they describe must sound pretty funny to you because of how small it is compared to your experience. However, as a person who has not ever been addicted to opioids, I assure you that even the "small" habits you describe would be a huge problem for me and would certainly have a major negative impact my life. The only reason that 15 bags a day seems normal to you is because of escalation and normalization over time. From my perspective, that is a crazy amount.

The intervention show isn't really out to help addicts in the general public directly, it reaches their families and lets them know that there are alternatives to facilitating their drug habit/writing them off which is the choice that many families of addicts eventually face.

Apparently the guy who was addicted to DXM supposedly used to post here on Bluelight.

I remember reading his posts about it.
