im positive it has nothing to do with being in water or drowning, its called near death experience, you hear this kinda thing a lot in these instances, people who almoost die in surgury and all kinds of situations report instead of panic and all that, a relaxed, self-loving state where you accept your fate and everything, and you feel at peace. Its very common in situations like this, however i am sure that being consciously deprived of oxygen to your brain would cause your body to visciously fight it until it was totally impossible to fight anymore, however on the flipside you could UN-consciously do it like with drugs, and i think this would be ENTIRELY comfortable, since we have experiences like the preceeding where once you start on your way to death you feel very good and not horrible, the thing to do then is find a method of geting to that point that is very comfortable, and the answer seems to be an overwhelming; OPIATES! , they will make you feel awesome while you are on your way, and they assure comfort and keep you from reacting harshly like you would if conscious.
The body will fight as long as it can to get what it needs, unless your not conscious, believe me you dont want to deprive yourself of oxygen while conscious, nor do you want to bleed to death awake, etc etc, you get the point, make it comfy.
just DONT DIE is the best answer, life can get a lot better for you if you are feeling down, granted there are situations where it wont, but please take a few more looks at whats going on, life is much nicer than death in most cases, and you would probably be sorely missed, just reconsider for a while.
Peace
