Insomnia - What are my options?

Ok. I'm convinced i have honest-to-god insomnia. It can't be attributed to regular drug use because i haven't been doing anything (summer sucks - this area's boring as shit). Simply stated, i have immense trouble falling asleep at night. And even when i do get to sleep, i don't sleep that well at all.
What i'm asking is, what are my options? I've read all about hypnotic sedatives and i've also read that these are mainly prescribed as a short term solution.
So let's say i visit my gp and tell him all about my problem. What are the chances he'll give me a sleep aid right off the bat? Also, assuming i get them and they work, how can i procure them for the long term? Lastly, is there anything in particular i should say (or not say) to him? Cuz i really don't want to walk out of there with a script for paxil or some other worthless dog shit like that. Thanks in advance.

Try and get Ambien, it works like a charm. Benzo's also work well, such as alprazolam, clonazepam, etc. You'll most likely get Ambien or Sonata or something in that family to start off with.

Trazadone and melatonin are also commonly scripted out to people with insomnia.
If he gives you junk, your best bet is to take it and show some signs of being soemwhat optimistc about it. A couple of weeks later give him a call and tell him that your insomnia has not improved in the slightest bit.
Are you in school? If so, claim your condition is severely intefering with your perfomance at school and your afraid you are gonna fail. You'll notice the doctor will become much more agressive in in treating your condition.
If your not is school, just lie and say you are. Be ready to asnwer questions like "Oh yeah, what's your major?"

If you really have strong insomnia you will accept the treatment he gives you. Which will probably be an SSRI such as Paxil.
However if you are just trying to scam your doctor for sleeping pills. Do not say you have suffered insomnia for a long time, as he will tell you to take an SSRI. Say that you have something coming up (work commitement, school, exams, etc) and you are extremely stressed about it and can't sleep. Hopefully you will get Ambien.
But if you really realy have bad insomnia take the SSRI it will help.
And yeah theres plenty of herbal stuff around that can help. For example Valerian, Kava and Melatonin. Marijuana helps aswell.
Antihistamines like Benadryl, etc will also knock you out.

I suffer from the same thing. Even before I started doing drugs I had insomnia. It sucks because there is nothing you can do. You just lie in bed trying to sleep and your mind doesn't let you. I have tried all the sleep aids and have found only two that really help me out. One is Temazepam. This is prescribed as a temporary short term relief to curb insomnia. It is usually written in only two week supplies from my experiences. The downside is that you are never going to get this. This is more or less along the lines of a last resort. The other is Ambien. This shit works great. The only downside is that it gives you wicked dreams. I would tell the doctor that you were watching t.v. & an Ambien commercial came on. Ask him if you could try it out like the commercial says. This should do the job for you. Good luck...

i know what u mean, when summer comes around u don't have jack shit to do and u just become 'like not tired'. I have the same problem although I know you've prolly heard this a billion times try to fall asleep at the same time, cut out caffiene and sugar, work out, and maybe eat some ambien just to help u get back into the mindset of sleeping?

thanks for the replies. i think i'm going to make an appointment some time next week cuz i'm busy as hell right now. As for my sleeping...i wrote that post last night at around 1am. i never did get to sleep and here i am at work now 6 hours later.
fuck. i'll probably be nodding off in my staff meeting in three hours (not that i don't usually anyway ;) ).

do NOT accept Elavil if they offer it!
the tricyclic antidepressants (like elavil) are dangerous drugs and should NEVER be prescribed for sleep... i think they only do it because of the low abuse potential.

I had insomnia from hell for about 9 years. I used to deal with it by either smoking or drinking myself into oblivion, or doing heaps of speed to not even bother with trying to sleep.
I had to take crappy part time jobs with afternoon shift hours just so I wouldn't have to get up in the morning with 2 hours sleep.
About ayear ago it just went away. Around the same time I learnt how to cook and started eating real food at regular kinda times. I also got a job that involved shitloads of walking.
Since then I've been dropping off like a baby within half an hour of hitting the sack, nearly every night! (Only when somethings really bothering me do I have probs sleeping.)
Not sure if it's just coincidence or if I just grew out of the whole insomnia thing (I'm 26 now)
but it seems to me that a decent diet, a little bit of excercise and mainly LACK OF STRESS helps bigtime.
Remove yerself from the stressful situations, eat proper food, get the blood flowing and it's possible you can cure yerself.
Or you could continue as you are and just take pills. :)
Good luck to ya James, it's no fun living in hell and not being able to escape.

PS I still can't sleep before 2am but the jobs I have mean I dont hafta get up till 10.30 :D
If you choose the real food and excercise option, you'll find yerself tireder than you've ever been for about a month. You'll sleep, but you'll wake up tired as fuck and be like a zombie for a few weeks while yer body gets used to the new situation.
But that too will pass and I guarantee you'll feel pretty alright. Adjust your lifestyle to suit your sleeping cycle. And don't forget to lose the stress.
Nothing is worth feeling like a dried up piece of shit for.

lack of stress is not an option given my current profession. i just spent 5 hours trying to get a cold fusion script to work remotely using microsoft internet information server, which i might add is the most peice of shit program i've ever encountered.

I was just perscribed Oxazepam 30mg because of the last few sleepless nights. I will let you know how well it works. Also, I just snorted 2 to see if it can be any fun in other ways.

Benzodiazepines cannot be snorted, so Oxazepam will be useless snorted. If you feel anything it is from the drip going down into your stomach and being absorbed there.

I also have pretty bad insomnia. I have not slept more than 2 hours in any one night in the last 7 days except for one night when I took xanax at about 3am. that night I got almost 4. I also have to work early in the morning. Nyquill does nothing for me, tylenol pm, meletonin, etc do nothing. Ambien has worked however I have never gotten a prescription for it. Xanax always works, but I don't like taking it any more often than I have to.

in my experience (and i am a long term insomniac), if you go to a doctor and tell him you have trouble sleeping, he will ask if you want to go to a therapist.
what i never tried, and would probably be a good solution, is to try a sleep disorder clinic.
the only thing that ever helped me sleep well was ghb.
