Does anyone know where I can find information regarding the amount absorbed and speed with which a drug can enter the blood stream by the various means of taking a drug (ie orally, rectally, mucas membrane, etc)?
Thanks.
Drugs, Society and Modern Behaior. Levinthal, '99. I left my book school, my girl is supposed to bring it up tonight. If i get it, and get the chance, i can post the different speeds. by the way, it's a textbook.

Every drug is a little different. Which do you want to know about? The best way to find out would be to explore specific substances.
Use google, the chemical name (not brand name) and key words like "pharmacology" "neurophamacology" "absorbtion rate" etc....Rxlist.com is also very helpfull. You are asking for a huge amount of information. It is unlikely you will find it all in one place.
Thanks all. I thought it might be a little different depending on the substance. I was hoping to find a distilled layman's version for common recreational drugs.
I guess what brought all this up is some discussion I've heard about how eating meth lasts longer than by other means. This confuses me because in discussions concerning X I've heard that taking it orally, results in a lower amount of X being absorbed than by other means. Thus, how can eating something, where the least amount will be absorbed, have the result of lasting longer?
One would think that the method that delivers the most of a substance to the bloodstream (ie IV) would last the longest, but I'm told this isn't the case. I guess it has to do with the rate at which a substance enters the bloodsteam and not just the total amount that enters it.
Yup. You answered your own question. The rate of absorption is the determining factor in how long a drug will last.
A lot of the chemical is broken down (read: destroyed) in the stomach before reaching the blood stream, leading to a more inefficient route of administration. It also leaks into the bloodstream fairly slow.
With IV, it's all in the bloodstream right away, and out almost as fast.
