Success, adulation of millions, moolah and plum perks. The cult figures in music get all these things on a platter at an early age.

Then, what is it that turns the applecart upside down and drives them towards disaster, drugs and more - as in the case of Amy Winehouse? TOI speaks to some well-known members of the musical fraternity in the city to glean the facts...

Whither support
According to singer Pinkoo Joseph, it's not the western music that should be blamed, but the disturbed childhood that plays havoc with these singers' lives, who court success big-time. "Here in India, we have a strong family support and a value system that's imbibed in us since childhood. But, in most of the western societies, parents aren't able to do that because they themselves aren't exactly the role models. So, these celebs easily fall prey to drugs and alcohol," says he.

Handling success
But, the drug abuse issues can't be blamed on western society alone, feels sound engineer Nitin Joshi. He goes on to add: "In the west, drug abuse is mostly prevalent among the new-age singers, who climb the popularity charts early on, unlike the western classical artists like Beethoven, Mozart etc, who became known in 40s. So, whether it's Michael Jackson, Britney Spears or late Amy Winehouse, they are not able to handle success and its add-ons. Then, they are exploited by their own coterie and that can also lead to frustrations. With nobody to guide or ground them, the disasterville is obviously waiting to happen."

'Seeing' music
The explanation behind celebrity singers' drug-alcohol nexus is lot more complex, says DJ Jabs, the promo producer of Radio Mirchi. "I have interacted with many rock, techno and trance singers, who have told me firsthand that drugs for them are a 'must have' to be in sync with that heavy music. They claim that after taking certain acid drugs, they 'actually see music and not just feel it'. Their argument is that to sing heavy music with lots of distortions at around 134 beats per minute, drugs are needed to be in sync. That is the sad reality of soul and techno music today," says DJ Jabs.

But, it's possible to retain sanity despite so many disturbing factors involved, claims DJ Gurpreet Singh, who adds: "They should be guided by the seniors in the music fraternity to steer away from the destructive path of drug abuse. If they have the will, these celebs can hold on to myriad positive things in life. But those, who are weak-willed, must be helped by others around them."

The India families I know of tend to idolize there male heirs and leave there female heirs in the dust. The boys are princes who get whatever they want but the women are anything but princesses in the families eyes. And why aren't parents role models? I see no evidence for that, or the linkage between why all singers have parents that aren't role models. Unless he's suggesting that there are no role models in the western societies.

Unlike the western classical artists like Beethoven, Mozart etc, who became known in 40s

Yes because there were tons of drugs for these classical artists to do. Also they were popular earlier on in life. I mean for goodness sakes, Motzart died before he was 40.

That is the sad reality of soul and techno music today," says DJ Jabs.

So these 'certain acid drugs' let them see music. I'd certainly like to take some of these 'acid drugs.' And why is it heavy music at 134 BPM? I don't think soul music has exponentially more drug use or gets even close to fitting in with trance and techno.

"They should be guided by the seniors in the music fraternity to steer away from the destructive path of drug abuse. If they have the will, these celebs can hold on to myriad positive things in life. But those, who are weak-willed, must be helped by others around them."

Good grief. I forgot that all musicians join this fraternity of support automatically.

This is a hideous article.

EDIT: For more great Indian info read 20 Never Tried Before Tips For Sizzling Sex. I'll let you in on a secret, these have been tried before. Did you guys/gals know that breathing on someones neck is considered erotic? I didn't before this.

^The comment section on that article is pretty nuts. I don't usually expect to read about the wrath of Allah in comment sections, especially not on a "how to have sensual sex" article...

Where are you seeing the comment section? I submitted a comment yesterday (not the one about the wrath of Allah!!!) and never saw it posted. Now the article format has changed and there is no sign of a comments section at all. If you are able to see comments then please post them.

Update: I just realised it's the "sizzling sex" article that has the comments, not the racist drug-related article about western musicians. The comment in question is...

TOI is a kaafir newsaper. It shall face the wrath of Allah....Its a paper written by the Christians

Looks like Sameer incurred some "wrath of Allah" for himself judging by the replies to his comment ;-)

Summary of the article: "Poor, shameful Westerners. We Indians are far superior to our Western counterparts, especially in the morality department."

Celebs fall victim to drugs and alcohol simply because of the environment that most are surrounded by and by having all the money that one could possibly spend.

I think most people who have a bunch of money and constantly socialize with people who are using drugs and alcohol and attend parties where there are drugs and alcohol present will fall victim at some point. I also think that many celebs think they are invincible which isnt going to make the problem any better.

It would take a TON of self control from me i know that.

lol awesome article. "these acid drugs..." "the state of soul music" [soul music?? WTF??] ahh, the gibberish of the non-english-speaker's filter of North American culture. it just NEVER gets old!!

You guys need to remember that Indian society is very different from Western society. Drug use by regular people (non tribals) outside of places like Goa is practically non-existent. Conservative values dominate family life.

You need to remember that this article is largely a tabloid attempt to ride the whole celebrities and drugs use theme that became popular after winehouse's death.

It's like reading Fox News or New York Post - you can't expect anything meaningful out of such articles.

i just said it was funny. its obvious you cant take one culture's intepretation of another's pop culture seriously. its a pretty far stretch.
