The Penang High Court sentenced Habeeb Nashtar Abdul Mutalif, 51, who worked at a restaurant here, to death for trafficking in 12 kg of ketamine, also known as party drug.

...

Habeeb Nashtar was charged with committing the offence at the Special Passenger-Check Unit at the arrival hall of the Penang International Airport in March last year.

Judicial Commissioner Nurmala Salim, in her decision, said the defence had failed to raise a reasonable doubt against the prosecution's case.

"The accused did not know who would be receiving the goods (ketamine in his possession) when he arrived in Penang. He did not have any telephone number or the name of the person or coffee shop supposedly meant to receive the goods. He should have known," she said. She also dismissed the defence's contention that the accused was an innocent carrier, saying it could not be accepted.

fengtau,
how long from trial to gallows for this fellow would you say?
singapore was swift when i lived there, bullet train compared to maylasia's diesel electric .

In maylaysia possesion of any amount of ketamine is concidered trafficing from what I read about their laws.

If the penalty is DEATH, don't you think that's exactly why this guy didn't have an address/phone number/know who he was meeting? They were probably waiting for him outside to airport, if he doesn't show they figure he got arrested and bail leaving him to be killed.

Executed for Ketamine - a drug that literally convinced me against committing suicide on two occasions (and I'm sure has done the same for many other people).

Humanity makes me sick.

Gotta love drug laws in countries where the populace is mostly Muslim!!!! The religion of peace strikes again

The people who allow such drug laws to exist make me sick. The culture in that country and many other's in that region is fucked beyond words anyway. I don't think we should have any relations with such governments until they change their policies on human rights. I don't think a dime of western money should go towards repressive fascist countries such as Malaysia. Backwards Islamic policies play a part here (we all know how well states that are based at all on ANY religion turn out 8) ) but it is not all of it. These guys have no concept at all of human rights and they could care less.

The religion of peace strikes again

Name one religion that has brought any peace to this world. It's not only islam by a long shot. No religion is a religion of peace.

^ really, cause I thought it was a result of stupidity. Uhhhp sorry were talking about the same thing

I want to agree, but most drug laws in the US and Japan, for example, are also pretty backwards, and I would hate to have to take responsibility for them.

Agreed. Unfortunately, it seems that the Sarah Palin-types believe that US law should be based on Christianity. The US also has an international reputation for lacking concern for human rights (look at Bush's record on torture, for example).

Hard to argue with this, but the one religion that comes to my mind is Buddhism. I am not aware of any wars fought in the name of Buddhism. However, it may be that Buddhism is more of a "philosophy" than a "religion", which would exclude it from consideration.
"Religion" = many people giving up their own responsibility to create their own moral code and trusting that the group will do a good job for them. By doing this, they fail to fully become human beings, I would argue, as they lack the essential moral foundation, which can only be created individually, through experience and (attempts at) learning and wisdom.

We already know how this happens. It sucks and all, but people bringing drugs into those countries have gotta know the risks in what they are doing. I find it amazing that people continue to smuggle drugs to these countries. I suppose if I was poor enough and offered good money I could take see myself taking some risks... but damn people

Also, did anyone else read that title and think The Onion or at least find it funny? I expected this to link me to an Onion article about the whole country India being sentenced to death, it totally sounds like them.

Yeah, South East Asia and Sri Lanka are famous for being peaceful.
to a lesser extent, hinduism
That'll be the religion which provides the philosophical underpinning for India's reprehensible caste system and brutality towards Muslims, then.

Sorry to get shirty, but the Western romanticism about Eastern religions, particularly amongst those who are often highly critical of Abrahamic religion, really gets my goats.

the government wants people like you to commit suicide, I wish I was lying.

Did anyone else get the impression that this guy is being sentenced to death because he didn't snitch? If you click on the link you'll see that the other dude got 5 years for toting 11 kilos.

I wonder if the cartel had the condemned man's family dangling over a shark tank or something.

hear, hear yerg ! you took the words out of this life long atheist's mouth .

the shitloads of flower children that took the hippie trail through india looking for meaning in their lives only got delhi-belly for their efforts .

i can't conceive of how dense ppl can be that Romanticism of this nonsense still hangs on in their myths .

^I'm not a vehement atheist at all, I am very much open to the possibility of myths giving meaning to people's lives, and I don't desire to bash any particular belief system at all, it's really the double standard that bugs me.

I call unfair.
You are setting up the question to get the answer you want.
If you are looking for a religion associated with a country where there has never been a war, of course you can say that there is none.
However, this is due to human nature.

Some religions have actively caused violence and war.
Others, such as Buddhism (see disclaimer in my previous post) have not (to my knowledge), and believers actively seek to stop violence and war.
