Increasing violence on the streets?

i think you are on to something there...

pigs running around with guns isn't any better bikes riding around with guns...is it?

Depends on where you are. In the U.S. city that I live in, I hear gunfire on a regular basis...and by "regular basis" I mean a few times a week. The police department is not to be trusted, among other things. Most people own guns...because, once one person does, everybody has to have one. The de facto situation in some places in the U.S. is that the local police department is just another gang. Violence has always been an aspect of being in the cities. Well, that, and auto theft. Be glad you don't live in a U.S. city. (Not to derail your thread or anything...)

Everything is as it has always been, it's your outlook or perception of the world around that has shifted.

Crime and violence are down, but news reporting on it is higher than ever. Gotta keep the fear alive and the people divided, after all.

this is true but i think some cities/states r worse than others. often here in Sydney shootings and even murders do not make the news last week a shooting in auburn and a shooting/attempted murder in merrylands early may never made news. perth/wa media seem to be the worst fear-mongers.

I feel like I might just be getting old, but lately I've noticed a increase in random, unprovoked violence on the streets. Has anyone else?

I've always felt fairly safe walking around the streets, even in areas with a dodgy reputation, because it's always felt to me that violence in these areas happens for a reason, and if you know the right things to do or how to act, you wont be bothered. This has always worked for me, or perhaps I've just been lucky.

In the past few weeks though, two completely unprovoked incidents have really made me think times are changing. First time I only just avoided a confrontation with a group of guys as my ex arrived just as this group was converging on me. Second time this same ex had a knife pulled on him whilst walking to the supermarket. A girl sitting alone may be an easy target, but my ex is a fierce looking bloke and I'm surprised two guys would pull a knife to steal a phone or whatever they thought he had on him. If it was me I would've been fucked.

Both times have involved the same ethnicity of guys. I've always been one to tell my mates off when they stereotype a particular race, but after these two incidents I can see why people develop these views. Not saying that it's fair or rational, just that I understand.

The whole thing has really changed how I feel walking around in what I always considered a place I know and feel safe in, just the unpredictability of it.

Has anyone else noticed a similar rise in unprovoked violence, or have I just been unlucky lately?

this has been happening for agessss well atleast in the south west.Theres always some pissed bloke with with small dick syndrome trying to impresses his friends and show strangers that hes a tuffy.you have the advantage of being female me being not such a tuff looking guy i tend to be a magnet for these drunk fuckheads trying to prove themself. i rember when i was bloody 15 years old having a 12 gauge pump action shot gun poked into my chest after getting into a scuffle with these guys younger brother.i did NOTHING to deserve it!alls i was doing was standing near the door of a mates car bout to have a bong and this fucked up commy drove past n threw a beer at me the blokes girlfriend i was with called out "thats a waste of beer" he must of thought i called something offensive out to him and reversed the car back up jumped out ran up pushed me while doing his "what cunt what cunt!" thingy. this girl explained it was her who said it was a waste of beer but he just reached over and clocked me right in the cheeck (i was 15 years old and this bloke was like 23-25 n was my first real "fight" so yes i was scared shitting myself infact) resulting in all my braces to rip into my cheeck and then a king hit to the back of my head. at this point everything was just part of my fight or flight reflex so i hit him back and idno but sooooomhow we ended up on the ground with me in the right position to give him a few him a few good hits in. But before i knew it his tuffy older brother n his drunkin redneck friend jumped out to aid his younger brother.after they all did there "what cunt what cunt" mating call they jumped back in there car n drove off.they must of drove off and watched us cos once we got back to my friends house (right next to where all this happend) we were told those guys were back waiting in the drive way for us.so now full of piss and angry that this tuffy had to have his older brother and friend step into a fight with 15 year old that he picked i was more than ready to go.
we went out the front to where these cunts were sitting in there car waiting.we walk up n they all jump out telling me to say sorry or im gonna be sorry blah blah blah then some harsh words were exchanged (i felt a bit more confident having like 10 people on my side and full of piss WRONG) after that the guy that threw the beer at me walks around to the back seat pulls out a pump action shotty pumps it n push's the barrel into my chest n told me to say sorry and i did so they got what they wanted n fucked off. i went into shock walked into the spare room of my friends house n just passed out cold.
but yeah i must say i've seen more fights since the MD went dry but not much more.where i live if you go out to town you have to have atleast like 3-4 people with you or you become a target.unfortunately im a little fella and a lover not a fighter and i think thats what these type of people aim for.TBH im too scared to go to town without a knife after a incident involving my "best friend" from highschool kicked my door in knocked my dad out fucked me up with a hammer and and crow bar then smashed up my dads car.yes there was a incident between my dad my brother me and these guys but this was totally over the top plus as soon as we got there all these blokes wanted to do was insult us into somone bit back so they could have a reason to fight us.fucking meth heads! gotta love post traumatic syndrome 8(

p.s sorry if that was a bit of a ramble i smoked some meth at a doof last night and still quite talkative :)

dem cops dey be da ones who shot 2pac :p

Ive thought about this alot, I live in the CBD in melb and worked in a late night venue on king street for about a year or so.

I've never once witnessed a serious fight, mugging, attack after 2 years living in the city and walking home at all hours of the night.

I remember family members telling me to be careful how dangerous the cbd is at night but I feel pretty safe. Theres always international students walking around at all hours and people around, I dont really feel unsafe at all.

Maybe I just been lucky? I don't really go out clubs much anymore and keep to myself.

Most annoying thing is charity beggars and the getting stopped by bums asking for money.

^ I worked at a bar King St too for awhile and used to walk home at 3, 4, 5am and never once had any trouble. I feel less safe in the suburbs than the cbd, although one of my female friends was stabbed in the arm in an unprovoked attack on Collins St last year, by this group of 5 guys trying to make off with our bottle of vodka 8(

I love the way aussies write. Australia must be awesome. I don't know why they'd be shooting each other. They are adorable.

Here in So Cal, everybody has a gun. Or a knife. Or both. I prefer my knife because I know how to use it and I won't ever accidentally cut someone.

My husband carries two guns. My dad carries four guns.

Somebody got shot yesterday. Somebody is going to get shot today. Sometimes it's gang related but sometimes its just a random thing. Folks in my city enjoy shooting just for the target practice. Shoot for fun. Kill is win.

Black folk always get the worst of it, from my perspective. Mexican people drive by Black pedestrians and shoot them. I'm white so I don't know what the deal is, but I can tell you this... so many Black people have been killed by Mexican people that we are probably facing some serious riot activity pretty soon.

If Black people are shooting Mexican people, I don't know about it. There are people in So Cal from all over the globe, and I have friends from everywhere and I have Mexican family. I have only been to one Mexican funeral, and she died of cancer.

In total during my life I've had at least a dozen Black friends get shot. Fortunately they did not all die. Those who have been shot and lived are mad. Even if it's been years, they are angry that they got shot, and I think the violence has just begun.

There's no way to explain the violence, really. It must be the human condition.

im so glad gun laws are strict here.can imagen you abos with guns?!?!?no longer would shop keepers reciveve a hammer to the side of the head after handing over the money now they would just get a bullet to the face :\

thanks for the post, ugly. however i don't agree it's "just the human condition". lots of human communities live just fine without such crazy violence. few places on earth would rival what you (and many others) describe in the states.

so do guns kill people, or do people kill people?

i think its stupid we need laws on guns or anything else for that matter...people suck, why cant we come to an agreement on population and share what we have?
