and for some time
i wandered here
weeping
for i had lost the frameless painting
i clutched so tightly

yet, by the time it was gone
the image was all but devoured by mildew
so that you would not have been able to see
the delicately painted picture
of me
holding hands with the small child at my side

but it was burned into my mind
and the tears would stream down my face
as i stroked that picture night by night
so i beat the ground
and cursed the sky
that it had gone from me

yet somehow
in my wailing and grubbing i had moved the dirt
shifted the sand
and my red raw hands hit something
something more
something i had lost
way, way before

and i remember

now i will walk tall through this town
grinning fool of rags and rubble
mouth full of roots and sand
holding high the brush that painted it all
laugh if you must
but i go to begin
again

this is plain out beautiful! The metaphors you use: the picture of you and a child and the brush are awesome. Its full of hope and reassuarance: there is always a way to go on, even if it means starting over! Great write, totally made me smile!
