IN, Indianapolis - 12.10.09 Thursday - DJ Mark Farina @ Blu *REVIEW*

Definitely a good time.

I think Farina was a little intoxicated. We saw him kinda swaying/hovering over the decks at one point towards the end of his set. :o

Definitely understand what Gizzmo is saying about drink prices, but I've come to expect that downtown. They had some good specials going though. You can't beat $1 draft of anything....even if it's PBR.

Not my favorite style of music, but what George said.

Fun times! Thanks!

PS - What was with the $5 coat check giving out Red Bulls at the end of the night, rather than the beginning? I thought that was odd. I'm going home to sleep! lol

I totally expect it myself. I got home at like 1 so I was just gonna be the first to posts as many bitchy whiny points as I could first LOL

Thanks to everyone who came out last night. I did see a lot of smiles out on the dance floor. Get ready for DJ Dan January 14th.

Gonna try to be there early to hear my nuggs, Tyler and Ash the Stash!
Fail for not showing up! :X

Pros: Awesome set by Mr. Farina! $5 presales!

Cons: here goes the list/rant.......
Sorry but that club is NOT the place to enjoy house music. Sound was great at the beginning of his set, but by the end I was inserting my much needed ear plugs. The levels got much too loud.

Space...... I'm just not one for getting beer spilled on numerous times and burned by cigarettes. I don’t smoke anymore but when I did I was still aware of people around me and how I didn’t smoke in peoples faces. Now that I don’t smoke it bothers me even more in places like that. It makes it hard to enjoy a good night out. I leave smelling like an ash tray and my eyes are burning.

People...... patrons of the regular downtown bar scene (I guess) are rude as fuck!

Really are the words "excuse me" not in peoples vocabularies? How hard is it to really just ask "hey can I get by you?" or “excuse me” as your trying to pass by?

Thanks Slater and crew <3 for bringing him but I will not entertain the idea of ever going back to that venue.

I have to concur with much of that, unfortunately.

Leah had a hole burned into her skirt from a wild cigarette flail....and I almost had my eye poked out.

I also had some f'd up strippers fall on me, one of which drove her heel into the top of my foot. (that was actually a little funny at the moment, but my foot is killing me today haha)

I can't tell you how much beer was spilled on me, but I could probably get a good buzz from licking my clothes from last night. :o

I know that's part of going out and being in a crowd, but I have to echo the rudeness aspect. People were just plowing through all night.

Kinda hard to get a wrangle on that though, i suppose. People are just people, and when you herd them into a place like that, it's difficult to teach them manners. :|

that didn't take long.. blu is a great venue! if you don't come back to blu, i don't know who else will post negative reviews of our parties!! :(

I think this sums up my feelings as well. There was one drunk guy who spilled his beer on the 15 people around him constantly.

I loved the set and wished I could have stayed longer, but the points above kind of explained why we didn't stay later.

Big thanks to Slater Hogan and the whole MB crew for throwing events like this and bringing out the great House music artists of our time, but as Lea said I probably won't come back to blu.

Ohh there will be plenty of other BL's that will still attend your events at that venue. It just won't be me. :(

@ leah.

u should start up like a 'mystery raver' program...get fellow critical clubbers/partygoers to attend events, etc on the club owner's dime and rate the service, etc.

i think you'd be good at that...

as for everything that was said about drunk people and cigarette burns, stumbling strippers and the like...uh i guess it's to be expected. i don't know what its going to take to make some people happy with a venue other than transplanting smart-bar into downtown indy. i think the above gripes are fairly arbitrary when you're going out anywhere, especially a downtown nightclub. i mean...the fact that i saw mark farina for five bucks makes all of my complaints go away. i guess some people are too hard to please. and if you got a gripe about the drink prices...do like i did. buy a pint of rum before the show, sneak it in and take sips THEN take advantage of the $1 PBR's...

OH.. huge thanks to everyone that came out! we all had lots of fun! see ya for dj dan next month!

I by no means had a bad time. Like G said, Mark Farina for $5 is awesome like early Christmas. Since it's a weeknight, I wasn't doing any drinking, so I can't gripe about drink prices, but if I was...$1 PBRs doesn't sound like anything to gripe over. The bartender didn't even charge me for a diet coke.

It's a constant that people are going to smoke and act like the irresponsible drunks that they are. This is fine. The difference is that with a place like Therapy, there was a ton of open space, so if I'm getting beer spilled on me, there was always another place for me to stand/dance/vibe in order to avoid getting a beer shower or cherry-burned clothes. At Blu, the dancefloor is also the hallway, so there's really no place to dance around and enjoy the music. Also, getting stuck anywhere between that left-side-of-the-stage void area and the middle of the dancefloor probably amplified the problem. This isn't anything fixable, just an observation of the lack of dancefloor venues for big artists like this (the Colette party at Blu Martini a few months ago suffered the same problems)

I don't think it's too much to ask to not have to drive home smelling like some guy's last drink, but there's nothing anyone (especially the promoters) can do about that, so it's a moot point, just general frustration with the populace I suppose. I had a good time and could not believe I was actually seeing THE Mark Farina in Indy. Music was A+ and I was instantly greeted by Slater when I walked in. As mentioned before MB did everything in their power to make sure this was a grade-A party and any rants or criticism is not directed towards the hard-working folks who continue to bring grade-A talent to Indianapolis. Keep up the good work, fellas!

Red Bull Cola, actually... they left the Cola part off. Fortunately she didn't open it, so it's in my fridge now. Definitely wasn't planning on energy drink just before passing out.

well... i would just like to say: I HAD A FUCKING BLAST! & great talent = packed house. you know a DJ / artist is doing their job & doing it well, when you cant move on the dancefloor... & that goes for any venue. Ive been to massive venues that hold thousands, & could not evn lift my arms up* thats a movement, vibe heavy, I.E. something special... w/ that being said a BIG THANK YOU : Slater, John , Stew, Mark F. & Blu for being a home for that lovely house... this was a great time and a memory i will not soon forget... cheers*

After being in the promotion scene for 10+ years now, one thing I have learned is that the electronic music crowd is impossible to please, which is why i don't try anymore.

Everyone has a right ot their own opinion and I do respect that. Each person also has their own ideas of what makes it worthwhile to go to events, which I respect as well.

The same compaints held true when we did Keepin' It Deep at The Vapour Lounge. For those of you that do not remeber those days, we did our weekly Thursday event there and never charged cover for any of our international guests. We did Dieselboy, Stacy Kidd, Colette, Chuck Love, Diz, Kaskade, Sneak (we did charge $5 for that on a Saturday night).

I don't know where most of you hang out at on a regular basis, but the smoking thing is bad at every club in the city. I don't frequent The Vogue very often, but when it's packed in there people bump into me and spill shit on me. That's part of being in a venue that is capacity.

Does Blu have a good layout for a dance club? No. It was not built to be one, it has just morphed into that. There are some renovations in the works to fix that dancefloor space, and we are also opening a second room on the backside of the building that will hold another 300 people.

The bottom line is I appreciate any venue in the city that opens it doors for electronic music and is accepting of our crowd. So thank you to the bartenders, doors staff and management of Blu for allowing us to come in and play house music in your venue!
