impact of LSD on 80's/ 90's rave.

I never used ecstasy in early 90s - I was a sworn acid head - but a group of my mates would take ecstasy and go to this club called Shelley's, then they'd leave the club at 2-ish and meet us in whatever farmer's field we were tripping in. They liked both acid and ecstasy, as far as I can remember. Just depended what moood they were in each week. One moment loved-up on the dance floor, next moment sitting in a tent at the edge of enchanted woodland. but yep, the acid-heads/ravers *were* distinguishable - maybe only when you talked about music tastes, though.

edit: we picked libs in the autumn. Threw them into plastic bags and kept 'em in there til nightfall, by which time they'd turned into this stinking black, stomach-churning mush, which we made a brew from.

oh, if I remember rightly: an acid tab was about 3 quid and an ecstasy tab 15 quid.

Dont get me started on the bin dippers, they set english football back light years but all they can talk about is their "istoree"

Not to mention they could have gotten english football teams banned again when they climbed the fences in istanbul in 2005

And their fans are fucking shit as well compared to ours

Wheres their famous atmosphere here ??

I'd say away fans outsing home fans in 90% of grounds nowadays. One video doesn't tell shit. For what its worth I've been to both Stanford Bridge and Anfield numerous times, and both grounds have a shite atmosphere. Most top clubs do.

As for the hooliganism, at least the scousers aren't a bunch of neo-nazis ;)

Apart from that the tolerance does build up a fair bit. Always did more at outside raves. The most I did in a single night probably around 12 drops of very good quality liquid
Oh, right. Yikes.

this thread really surprised me, so acid was more popular than ecstasy in the early 90's then? Weird, I swear all the documentaries say that ecstasy dominated the scene and acid was easily available but not used as much.
Yep, same here! It's interesting to hear about rave culture from people that were actually there.. Tell us some more stories please, old ravers! ;)

Did acid and e together (candy flip) quite a lot in the mid nineties loved it a mate of mine made a load of caps of blotter/ speed and punted them made a fucking fortune tbf they were fucking good he named them something can't remember what exactly but people loved them......IMO speed/acid a good combo although nothing beats a big fat dove of the early nineties

Yeah the doves were nice - was a hell of a lot of better pills after them though. Maybe the quality of the pills changed with the scene so something like the Sunrises / X5's etc were more suited to the time?

Sunrises were lovely I got into the darker jungle 93 onwards a moodier more intense kind of e buzz if that makes any sense before that I was into your Dougal slip Matt happy hardcore great times pilled up completely different buzz/mind set enjoyed them both :)

I mentioned these before as they came out around the same time as the trips ! If you were into Jungle did you go to any of the 'Viper' nights in Milton Keynes?

A few of mates have tripped nicely off quaters of both the Alex Grey St. Alberts ('06 batch) & the Hoffman '100 YEARS' ('08 batch).

Those '100 YEARS' were extremely potent blotter!

I knew there would be some blotter in here somewhere :D

Pills were really expensive in the late 80's (25£) early 90's - you could get a few tabs of acid a bag of speed for less than it cost for one pill. I used to have to order mine (not online) but from a man in a pub - It took a couple of days for them to show up. My dealer said to me this day - theres this stuff called Ecstasy you would probably like it, should I get you some :D. Then as the years went buy (god I sound like a hippy) it started to get called E, then simply pills. The 'raves' started (for me) as clubs used to close at 2am but everyone was still tripping and wanting to dance - so afterparties sprung up about the place. Then as people got to enjoy the freedom of these afterparties instead of going clubbing from 10-2 (having to wear a shirt / no white socks / no visible tattoos / no jeans etc) the afterparties started earlier / finished later :D.

Yep when I first started clubbing I had been into acid for a while anyway, Es were too expensive and TBH we looked down our nose a bit on such lightweight drugs.

I carried on taking acid for a good while adding in speed to liven things up, I started not enjoying it so much. I'd always been into acid in an indoor setting and found it difficult to cope with the environment so for a while I just dropped the acid and took speed and smoked a lot.

I tried a few pills but wasn't that impressed given the £15 price tag, then the infamous MDA Snowballs became available and the whole scene changed, you could hear it in the music.

E is a far more accessible drug for a lot of people and fitted the party scene perfectly, I knew people that still did acid but the vast majority were taking E.

Acid had a big impact on the early scene but I don't believe the massive free party thing would have happened without E, it's ability to promote empathy and provide a huge amount of energy without scaring the shit out of loads of people was vital. The music being played changed and was clearly driven by E, the pace increased significantly but it retained the twisted psychedelic edge, partly from the original acid scene but I'm sure MDA and high dose MDMA made a contribution.

All nighters. They were all over the place round my way and in Jockland. But later they shut and we had to settle for 2.30am finishes. But the chill outs were sometimes as good/if not better than the night ! Especially if we had a load of 'wobbly eggs' so much fun going up stairs on them, turntables in the kitchen. =D=D

wobbly eggs mmmmm. gel-tex 10 or 20, yellow and green. saddly banned through i.v use. chalkies replaced them as you will know! but jellys were far better.

Interesting name you got there! God them snowballs furnished me with one of the most uncomfortable nightclub experiences of my life! I'm always a bit godsmacked that people still love to reminise over them! But when I got the damned things, my mates were all hardcore 10 pills a night types & they were like, "one of these is plenty", I guess I shoulda known to avoid them...

MDA at the correct dose would be lovely I'm sure. Sadly, after my snowball freak-out I gave away the last of my pills & started on a new batch of Doves or something... If I had kept them they'd be very handy now!

In the 80s/90s many people took LSD synthesized from safrole because it gave a more loved up feeling.

This lovey acid has since disappeared. Leaving many ravers upset and confused.
'Why' they say. 'Why has the acid not got any love anymore'?

The answer was in the wise old safrole tree.
Now extinct - the safrole tree doesn't exist.

And acid house is soley to blame.

Eh? :? LSD synthed from safrole? Are you taking the piss or just getting confused with MDMA?

Also, 'the safrole tree doesn't exist' - well, it never existed in the first place - the plant is actually called 'sassafras' don'tcha know? (well, yes, of course you know this, because you ARE taking the piss - bigstyle..)

Methinks you are being a little wag and pulling our collective plonkers my friend ;)

Fuckin' top avatar mate! Shelleys? Wasn't in Warrington by any chance was it?

would love if you could talk more about those days!

^ Really? =D

It is. Safrole containing trees still exist, and the safrole chemical is used in the synthesis of MDMA, not LSD. LSD and MDMA are still the same nowadays, they have the exact same chemical structure. The only difference is people are selling chemicals that aren't what they say they are, or they are selling smaller doses e.g. less acid on your blotter.

I'm glad people are putting Cornish right. I'm not sure where he gets some of his ideas from, if I didn't know him better I'd think he was having a laugh, but it's just his usual ill-informed, confused half-truths he gets from not reading things within their proper context. Cornish, learn to read!

Thanks. Yep, Gong must be my all time fave band and Camembert is a mythical, magical album :)

Yep, Shelley's was in Warrington. I never went there, but a group of my mates did. Came back absolutely wasted and always met us wherever we were tripping. Dem were der daze! :)

Aar, I thought as much.. I used to go Shelleys wasted on smack, watching all the E'd up babes strutting their stuff (didn't get into 'E' myself until much later).

As for Gong, awesome taste mate - Camembert, You, Angel's Egg etc. etc., all classics. When I first saw the inside of the gatefold version of Angel's Egg, I realised it was the exact depiction of a place I had visited on mushrooms several months earlier - it blew my fuckin mind I can tell ya =D (I've just tried to find an image of the inside of the gatefold sleeve and failed! For fuck's sake Google, get yer shit together!!!)
