I'm not into injecting things, but for the sake of knowing, what are the difference in effects with injecting intramuscular as opposed to intravenously? What happens when drugs traditionally thought of as being injected intravenously are injected intramuscularly, or viceversa?

IV injection results in a much faster delivery to your brain and body in a higher concentration. Read that as "rush". IM is a slower delivery resulting in a longer and not quite so intense rush. IM roughly requires about twice the amount of the substance as IV for the same effect. Nasal is slower yet and oral is the slowest to absorb.

I've never had an IM experience, but I've read that it has more of a potential to bruise the area and leave it sore for a day.
IV injections, if done correctly, shouldn't really hurt at the time of administration or any time there after. But there are also extenuating circumstances: shakey hands, a missed vein, dirty equipment, etc.

I am really puzzeled as to why anyone would even consider IM if you can IV the same thing, IV is faster, you get the hell rush & it doesn't hurt. If finding a vien is a problem, try running your arm(or whatever) under hot water or in front of a heater or something.

IMing street drugs is also more dangerous, because your bloodstream actualy can tolerate more then your lead to believe, where as bacteria/particles could be more damaging in the muscle tissue.

actually, there isn't a large difference in the amount of time it takes the drug (any drug) to hit you. comparing IV and IM.
IV ketamine will hit in about 10-20 seconds, you will taste it in your mouth almost as soon as you push the plunger.
IM ketamine will hit in about 40-60 seconds, but you won't ussauly taste it.
IV opiates(nubain) will hit in about 20 seconds also, and IM only takes about 30seconds.
IV opiates hit you a lot harder (i.e. all at once) lasting about 20-30mins and decreasing after that.
IM opiates are a much more steady release, lasts longer.(1-2hrs)
only "bad" thing about IM is you run the risk of an abcess (infection). but you can also get infections through IV use also, but ussauly toxins exit through the lungs.
BUT REMEMBER, MOST WHO GO IV FOR THE 1ST TIME, NEVER GO BACK TO IM. (like me, sadly, but i'm slowly beat'n it).
~hope this helps.
