I'm trying to figure out how the hell I got so wrapped up in pills in the first place..... jeez the shit sneaks up on you doesn't it? One day you're just experimenting and looking for a buzz and before you know it it's been years and now the pills OWN you... You've come to the right place. Many if not all here can relate to your situation.
I'm pro suboxone, some people aren't, I think it's the lesser of the two evils if you can't just quit cold turkey, and it's so true that every month you will spend more money on your drug of choice than a suboxone prescription.
Not everyone can handle cold turkey, and many that can just end back up at square one within months. For these people I think sub's pros outweigh it's cons, it allows you to live your life more freely, it's legal (this is big depending on what you're doing), it doesn't really get you high but it allows you get some stability and I think it's easier to taper off of.
I've used subs for short tapers before, I haven't used them for maintenance until recently, someday I may curse suboxone but as of now I think it is an invaluable tool if you really want to move on from opiates but need a little help.
Anyway, good luck, the main thing is wanting to get off the pills, if you want it bad enough I believe you'll find a way to make it happen.
I noticed you mentioned Ultram, you may find an antidepressant like Effexor to be helpful since they're supposedly similar in structure (both SNRI's I think?), it didn't work for me but I know it works well for some of my friends. I like Tramadol I hated Effexor. It may be a placebo effect but I've noticed that 5-HTP supplements help me.
