So, the problem began as something simple. I was drinking too much coffee at starbucks. Fast forward a few months and now I am on 800 mg of caffeine. What should I do? I honestly don't know what is going to happen if I taper down or stop. I'm too afraid to tell my friends and family. What will happen if I stop or taper down? Does anyone know? On the surface, it is not so bad. I seem normal. And I can do the things that I like to do much better. But is this a bigger problem than I am making it out to be? Someone please help me! I don't know what to do. Thanks so much bluelighters!

TAPER. The most common feeling is just going to be lethargy and maybe some headaches.
Taper down 10% every 3rd or 4th day and you shouldnt really notice much of any difference

Um...I didn't know abruptly ceasing a caffeine habit results in unpleasant symptoms?

As with anything, tapering is never a bad idea, but I bet you could taper this down to a cup of coffee a day within a week, two tops, without much difficulty.

I've noticed that the biggest thing that makes any withdrawal so terrible is the amount of worrying the sufferer does about it beforehand. It's just caffeine, it'll be ok.

If caffeine is the biggest of your problem, I'd say a taper and body cleanse, maybe some more herbal//natural methods for light caffeine, yerba mate tea, etc.

Drink more water too :)

Yes there is potentially a physical withdrawal for caffeine users.

Typically someone needs to drink caffeine consistently throughout the day for at least two weeks.

I have not experienced it personally though.

Ive been there man. When i got sober the first time I drank too much coffee, all day everyday. Quitting is not that hard. You will probably just have a headache for a few days and feel a little bit tired. After a few weeks without caffeine, as long as you eat healthy and exercise, you probably won’t feel like you need it anymore.

What i did to kick caffeine, is first lowered myself to 1-2 cups of coffee a day, after doing that for about a week, I switched to tea. If you don’t think you have the will power to moderate your coffee, you can just switch it with yerba mate tea, and then switch to tea’s with lower caffeine content.

You’ll be alright, it happens to the best of us :)

Is this satire? You're scared to tell your friends & family that you're drinking a lot of coffee and want to cut bacK? I don't mean to get elitist about drug addiction, problems are problems, but day 8 over here off of IV heroin and this thread seems like a literal joke.

Rio.. i thought this was a troll but i see legit responses so I guess not. Damn, i wish!!!! If that's your issue, consider yourself fortunate!

I was a massive coffee drinker, don't know how many mgs, but at least eight double shot espressos each day & diet coke in between.

I began getting migraines so I went to see a doctor and he said to stop right then, that I'd get less severe headaches from stopping cold turkey the coffee & coke.

My headaches never returned after a few days off. I went two years without any caffeine then more recently I've just began to have maybe once a fortnight a coffee for an energy boost and I get a great response from it.

No offense, but it is just caffeine. Perhaps you'll have a slight headache and maybe feel a bit jittery, but a couple of days you'll be able just fine.

I am going to leave this thread open because OP has been a BL for awhile and seems sincere. Please remember to follow the Sober living guidelines.

OP my advice is too quit the coffee cold turkey. Its gonna suck for a few days but with some Tylenol and a soft drink with your meals. Limit yourself to 3 soft drinks a day with your meal and you will be in better shape to judge a course of action in a few weeks. I also recommend you find a therapist just by reading your posts I think you have some kind of anxiety disorder. Of course I only play a doctor in the bedroom ;).
