Hi,

I have been tapering off Klonopin for the last 2 years and made it down to .375mg until I was admitted to a psych ward for suicidal ideation (the withdrawal became too much). So my doctor put me back on 3mg of Klonopin a day. I got a script filled with 90 1mg tablets and I'm down to 39. My tolerance was so high before attempting to come off (I was at 6mg) so I was foolish and took much more than I was supposed to. Please don't reprimand me! I know. My disorder is a cruel thing thing to deal with and I didn't even want to go back on the Klonopin. Anyway, what is the NYS law involving this? I know they won't refill until the month is over (March 28) but I'll run out way before then. Can I tell my psychiatrist I need 6mg to feel stable and can he write me a 2mg rather 1mg tablet and all will be fine? I feel like I've done it before years ago before I started tapering off. I'm afraid of having seizures now. I'm so upset that I let them put me back on this hellish drug!!! There had to be something else that was safer... :(

I'll see my doctor on the 14th. I'll probably be DEA flagged and they'll mark me an addict,

your post doesnt make sense in the matter of when u get ur refill... u say they wont refill till the month is over (march 2) but its already march 9th so u can get em refilled... or im asuming that was typo? the 14th of this month u get to see ur doc to get refilled? or jus go see your doc to get more kpins before u can refill ur script?

If your doctor increases the dosage of the clonazepam, or switches the clonazepam to an equipotent dose of another benzo like 'diazepam' (I'm using it as an example due to its similarly long half life), than you can get a new prescription.

Otherwise, start tapering. You have a lot of clonazepam left, and you can definitely make it through to your next refill if you slowly lower your dosage. I would immediately lower your dosage down to 4mg. That already gives you about 10 day.

-5 days: 4mg
-2 days: 3mg
-4 days: 2mg
-3 days: 1mg
-2 days: .5mg
-1 days: .25mg

Save the rest in case things become unbearable, and definitely seek medical attention if you must. Benzodiazepine withdrawal is very serious and can result in death if not properly handled. However I don't think you'll end up in horrible withdrawal as long as you just try and really space the remaining clonazepam out. I know from my own experience and ongoing struggle with benzo's/clonazepam, that luckily, due to the long half life, I can usually go a day without it and still feel okay. It's really somewhere between 48-72 hours when I notice the withdrawal really beginning to hit me.

Another option might be for him to write you a script for the .5 mg tablets. I don't know how NYS law works, but you might be able to get a script for that filled since it's a lower dosage unit. It has worked for me in the past, FWIW.
