I'm getting a pain medication prescription ...

... for post-op pain and it's most likely to be Tramadol (Ultram). How could I possibly convince the doctor to prescribe me something more entertaining (dihydrocodeine, morphine, whatever)? I need side effects that I can lie about that are not as likely to be experienced with 'real' opiates. This would be a 100-150mg/night dose.

What do you guys think? :)
 
I should think it would be based a lot on how bad the operation is..?
If you say the pain's doesn't go fully away, but is only slightly dulled, and it keeps you awake and crap, it might help. But as I'm not too sure, keep looking for other ideas. Usually if the first med doesn't seem to be working they'll concider giving you something else for the pain. But you've gotta try it first, and play it well.
Have a history of opiate use/addiction? You'll be less likely too get something, as they'll probably figure you're just looking to use it for recreational reasons.
Keep in mind that if you waste it all getting high, you may actually want it for the pain later.

Tell the doc that you don't like Ultram, and that it doesn't work very well for you. Customer service! Damn it!!!! You are paying for his sunday golf round for heven's sake, he shouldn't give you drugs you don't want!!
 
I've always had REALLY bad nausea from Tramadol...unlike any nausea on standard opiates....so perhaps you could say that? Mention that opiates didn't give you this problem...since Tramadol works in a different way from opiates, it would not be weird for you to have a different response to it.

Perhaps you'll get vicodin (hydrocodone) instead. I doubt you'll get morphine though, if the first choice of pain med your Dr decided on was Tramadol.
 
How invasive is the surgery? Tramadol as post-op analgesic is a new one on me; it just does NOT do give relief for more than slight-to-low-moderate pain. It may be slightly sedating in prescribed doses, but if I were having true surgery, I would cancel the surgery if my physician insisted on tramadol post-op. Now, if we're talking taking out wisdom teeth, you might have a more difficult job convincing him/her.
 
You'd cancel your op if you were to be given tramal? Come on pal. I won't tell you what kind of an operation it is cause it's a) my own business b) too easy to track me down this way but I can tell you most other docs don't prescribe anything at all. At that clinic they just don't apply any dressing for the wounds to heal faster. It hurts a bit for a couple of days, so they also prescribe Tramadol. Which I, in turn, want to substitute for something more fun ;)

Neways, I think I'll buy off Tramadol and in the next day call 'em groaning how badly I puked and how the med didn't help me any. Thus I'll end up with some ultram and, hopefully, some more dhc/morphine for pure fun ;)

PS. Hydrocodone/hydromorphone/oxycodone isn't prescribed in my country. It's tramal, codeine and morhpine in most cases. Go figure.
 
Whoa! Didn't mean to pry. Given your options, I agree with you. I assumed your doc had access to hydro- and oxycodone or meperidine (Demerol), and figured his pain-management philosophy was of the "stiff-upper-lip" school, and that you'd fare better med-wise with virtually any other doc. It still seems a hell of a long jump from tramadol to morphine. No hydro- or oxycodone? Uncivilized! Barbaric! Tragic!

You can hope for that but I guarantee if they believe your story you won't end up with ultram...wanna know why? Cuz it's the same medicine as tramadol...they'll probably bump you to tylenol 3 or hydrocodone if you're lucky, but i'm not sure of this if you use the sick excuse...
 
Oh, I read it as, "i got so sick from the tramadol i will end up with ultram, and if i'm lucky some morphine for fun." Hmm, oh well, either way now he knows they're the same if he wasn't already aware...
 
Ultram and Tramal are brand names for tramadol (sometimes named generically) and I know that. It's quite similar with Meperidine (vel Pethidine) being named Dolargan or Acetaminophen (vel Paracetamol) being named Apap/Tylenol.
 
Tramadol (ultram) is a terrible painkiller. If I were you I would not opt for the sickness route to obtain a better narcotic. Just tell the doc that you notice no effect what-so-ever from 1-2 pills, and (depending on the surgery) you are in some serious pain. Do not stop complaining until you are happy with what you are prescribed. Perhaps you could use the sickness gig once you get what you want, just to get a bit more narcotics. Couldnt hurt.
