I personally go to a theater to watch a movie and get lost in the plot line. You know, when you exit the theater and are surprised it is now night.

Problem is, most actors/actresses seem to have the false impression that I give a rats ass about their personal beliefs on religion, global warming...
As a result it becomes impossible for me to view Mission Impossible III without a glib mental image popping into my mind. Hence, illusion shattered.

i agree. the fact that someone is a celebrity hardly makes them qualified to comment on world politics, religion, or the host of other issues that demand public input. (it might even make them less qualified than the average person.) however, since i usually agree with most of the social causes that celebrities take up, it doesn't usually become a factor (for me).

i heard Bono use a "pub stool" analogy once to explain the celebrity-cause phenomenon. in reference to his own social causes, he said that he is still the same as any idiot stting at the corner bar shooting his mouth off, and you still have a choice as to whether you want to listen or tune him out. celebs just have a bigger stage to say stuff.

though some celebs become so fanatical, like Tom Cruise, that is does become difficult to ignore, even when they are performing...

Good point. They may actually be less qualified on a given matter.

Which reminds me of my other theory. Actors/actresses are required to assume the persona of the various characters they play. Their reality is whatever movie they are currently in. This process has to take a wicked toll on their mental stability. Most actors/actresses are continually trying to convince us that they are someone other than who they are.

Problem is, the majority of people today indulging in pop culture are fuckwits who couldn't give a shit about the world around them, so if it weren't for the odd celebrity taking causes up as their new thing, people might not ever know there are problems in the world that need fixing...

A lot of these people donate MILLIONS to these good causes and educate the public as well. I say right on. More then i'm doing, or anyone that I know really..
