Tens of thousands of Illinois residents are expected to be affected when drug and alcohol treatment and prevention centres across the state have their budgets cut from March 15.

The harsh budget cuts, proposed by Illinois governor Pat Quinn, who is a Democrat, will mean that from next month, all state funding will be cut.

After that date, only federal (national) Medicaid dollars will be available to fund the state's drug and alcohol treatment and prevention programmes, which means that some centres are facing closure.

Talking to the News-Gazette, which serves East Central Illinois, Sara Howe, CEO of the Illinois Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Association said: '80 per cent of our clients on March 15 would be thrown out of care'.

That adds up to around 55,000 people who will lose their help battling drugs.

^can't get rid of them now, they'll be needed to arrest the flood of addicts out comitting crimes

Guys, calm down.

There are always more children to get addicted to __ and die in this crossfire of intentions, we are talking about drug users for fucks sake!

Harm reduction? That isn't my job, I'm here to get paid and look good!

The whole country is in bad shape, this guy just cut what he felt was least necessary, unfortunately he proally didn't realize just how many people are affected by drug addiction. It's not just the users, it's the families of the users, the friends, so on so forth. So while he saw slashing funding for something 55,000 people use as a good idea for who knows what reason, it's obviously not thought through very well.

What the Republicans are trying to cut is nothing short of unbelievable.
"• National Drug Intelligence Center -$11M
• Law Enforcement Wireless Communications -$52M
• US Marshals Service -$10M
• FBI -$74M
• State and Local Law Enforcement Assistance -$256M
• Juvenile Justice -$2.3M
• COPS -$600M
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services -$96M

Not even half of what is on the list.

Prepare for a double-dip recession ("double dip" refers to a recession followed by a short-lived recovery that then slides back into a second recession). Yet again, even more lives are going to be destroyed by politicians.

good riddance!

fuck the cops and fuck the recovery industry.

^There's a lot of other things on that list that shouldn't be cut. And besides those, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services are very important.

Looks like 2011 is going to be an interesting fiscal year. Cutting state services is not the way to boost the economy. Of course they don't really care about boosting the economy, just about boosting the profits of their corporate interests.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services are very important.

I ain't knocking mental health, but I can't see substance abuse treatment as much more than one wing of the "good cop / bad cop" setup that the international police apparatus uses to keep itself running.

(maybe I shouldn't talk; I'm a recovering recovery counselor and I have a lot to atone for)

this is naive. politicians know what they're doing with the budget, and how it effects people. they're bought, and the bribery is right out in the open...

^ "If you cut $61 billion of spending out of the economy over the next six months, you make the "demand deficit" larger, not smaller. In the process you destroy jobs. It's that simple. Or as Republican Leader John Boehner might say, "So be it."

Most thoughtful Republicans actually understand that. But one reason they continue to support these cuts is that by hurting the economy, it will benefit them politically.......

A second reason that the Republicans are supporting these damaging policies is that the crazy relatives they used to try to keep out of sight have burst into the living room.

For many years, the interests of Wall Street and the biggest corporations have completely dominated the economic policymaking of the Republican Party. While this wing of the party pays appropriate tribute to "restraining spending" and "smaller government," their ideology is not really about principle. They adhere to only one core ideological premise: They favor whatever is in their own economic interest.

Wall Street and big corporations are generally advocates of "smaller government" because they want to cut their taxes and reduce government regulations that prevent them from injuring consumers, fouling the air or engaging in the kind of reckless speculation that sunk the economy in 2008 and cost 8 million Americans their jobs. ^ Wasn't aware you knew Pat Quinn so well. My apologies, can you source your statements or are they just typical counter-culture rederict?
i was talking in general terms, and on that level, i don't think what i said is "just rhetoric". but you're right, i don't know anything about Pat Quinn, perhaps he's a great guy, i don't know.

though my point was that politicians do tend to know when they give financial priority to those whose money helped get them into power, rather than to popular or vital programs.

^Very true, politicians usually always back whomever supported their campaign. I find it odd though that he cut the police budget as well, perhaps they didn't support him so much? Hard to say just what is really going through Pat Quinn's head, Id hope he's getting something out of it.

Cops are the most important thing state/federal governments have. For when marshall law is put into effect they will be used to round of people over food/water riots and bringing them off to FEMA camps.. lol fuck u evil people
