The art is alive and kicking. Mostly, it's from foodies and such that are tired of the shitty commercial stuff and want to make something better. (Yes, I called it shitty. Bring me your most expensive liquor and the sloppy cuts will make me vomit.) Fix yourself up with a VM model and you can get some flavorless 95% easy. Pot stillers are more into whiskeys and rums.
I've had the pleasure to be around a 15 gallon propane powered pot still. Not gonna say whose it was, but the distiller has had some pretty good reviews from his friends.

I always wanted to make a reflux still but copper is so damn expensive...
The best thing I ever made was a highland single malt. Wasn't quite as good as Walker Green Label but I didn't want to age it 8 years
The coolest thing in the world is when you get the grain bill of a common liquor such as Jack Daniels, 60% corn, 30% barley, 10% rye or something of the like. Once you distill it the liquor comes out crystal clear, then you toast some white oak chips to about 425F and then toss em in the liquor, they actually turn the white liquor into the carmel colour that we love.
Distilling is an art form, my great grandfather had a 20 gallon copper kettle that he used to make brandy during prohibition and the depression, luckily I own it now and plan to fire it up one day. Awesome thread Damien!

states vary in booze regs. i am fortunate that mine and the one i lived in for half my life had 95% (190 proof) alc in liquor stores . some states have a max of 151 proof allowed for retail sales.
$37.50 for a half gallon . i don't care for any other distilled spirits because the residual sugars generate hangovers in me. my neighbor spends large for top shelf booze and is a snob lush .

Well i live in atlantic time and due to our close proximity to a island owned by France where the booze is plenty cheap boot legging is more or less a tradition in alot of aeras. Of course it's moved with the times and instead of a boatload of booze there might be a boat load of coke or whatever but theres still a good bit of illegal home made or imported and fucked with booze. As in buy a bottle of pure alcohol at a certain place, bring it back here and water it down by 50%. Ya gotta becareful who you buy off and look had at the bottles before you buy em unless you wanna get burned.
Theres still alot of moonshine being made her out of everything from just sugar, water and yeast to kinda moonshine rum. Ive had homemade moonshine and ive gotten very fucked up on the shit, blacked out and done alot of dumb shit on it. You get drunk so fast on it if your not careful that you don't quite know your drunk until you end up face planting on the ground.
