Illegal Alcohol i.e. Moonshine or White Lightning

I thought illegal alcohol is a thing of the past but I recently saw a TV show which made me think otherwise. Here is an article from CNN dated August 28, 2000 which states that people are still out there making alcohol and money from its sale in the US. Given the production standards and guaranteed purity of legal commercial alcohol I would rather pay the extra money to insure my safety.

So here are my questions to you Bluelighters mainly from Appalachia or a country where alcohol is illegal:

Do you buy it?
Is it hard to find or is it popular in your region?
Do you find yourself buying direct or is there a chain of some sorts that you are at the bottom of?
Why do you buy it over legal alcohol?

I am dying to know: Is moonshining still alive? :D

If alcohol was illegal, I think that would be its only advantage gone out the window.

Not sure I'd bother trying to find any on the black market, anyway..

the first time I ever got drunk was on Tennessee moonshine. I don't know where he got it, but my friends step-dad had a bottle of it. I had maybe 2 or 3 shots worth of it in a cup and I was one TRASHED 14 year old. =D

I know that in the US homemade distilled liquor which is sold for profit is illeagal. Homebrewed beer or wine or small amounts of home distilled liquor for personal use is perfectly within the law. However if its non-regulated and sold for profit (Moonshine) it is very illeagal. Moonshine is easily found in most Eastern Southern States or other rural areas throughout the US. The reason its desired is for price (this is a major factor in poor rural areas) about 20USD per gallon and strength. Since its unregulated the the alcochol percentage can reach close to 100%. (I have no sources for that just first and second hand accounts from friends)

I'm pretty sure that moonshine is basically just distilled grain, without any aging, added flavors, or anything. so really, all liquor starts out as moonshine but through fermenting/aging/more distilling/flavor additives it becomes whatever it gets sold as.

that was the idea that I got from the show I watched about it. it was on the history channel, Modern Marvels maybe? is that the one you saw too, Damien?

Yes that is the one. It showed modern stills that were obviously for producing volume for sale so I know its out there I was just wondering about some of the intricacies surrounding its culture.

One time this big stinking redneck told me his recipe for making moonshine from corn. Apparently it is something that is still done quite often. People who are big alkies like to drink it as it is very high proof and can get you really smashed really quickly.

This guy said that simply holding it in your mouth without swallowing will get you drunk, but then again he also ate possum so who knows.

Couldn't they just buy Everclear/any other similar product if they were THAT desperate to drink something that feels like having your throat smashed against a rock for a couple of hours?

Oh and it is allegedly called moonshine because it was transported across state lines under cover of darkness during a full moon.

yep, from wiki:

The name is often assumed to be derived from the fact that moonshine producers and smugglers would often work at night (i.e. under the light of the moon) to avoid arrest for producing illegal liquor. The 1811 edition of the Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue, originally by Francis Grose, defines "moonshine" as follows: "A matter or mouthful of moonshine; a trifle, nothing. The white brandy smuggled on the coasts of Kent and Sussex, and the gin in the north of Yorkshire, are also called moonshine."[1] It has been suggested that the term might derive from smugglers' explaining away their boxes and barrels as "mere moonshine" (that is, nothing).

White lightning? That's a cider here. Very shitty cider:

Yeah haha, you make moonshine. Its easy to come by if you know a shiner. Otherwise prolly impossible. You should try to work a still and let us know how it goes.

I uhh, ahem, happen to be from an area where this shit is still made. From my experience it is very hard to find a connection (not that I've tried very hard). I've only tried it stolen from a high school friend's granddad's stash years ago. It is sold here in milk gallon containers. That shit will put your dick in the dirt. It seems to me it generally only goes around the old, old heads circle, and they keep it every bit as secret as a meth lab...

i highly doubt that would work. i tried it with 100 proof vodka and it didn't work but it burned like hell. now if you were going to use a use an even stronger liquor, i think it would just burn more and still not work. it might be possible for someone who has a very low tolerance to alcohol but i still think it would burn their mouth too badly for it to make any sense to do.

any different effects 2 'legal' alcohol?

personally i dunno y any1 wd bother 2 search illegally fo a drug thats 1)legal and 2)pretty shit compared 2 illegal drugs

SWIM claimed he had moonshine that he got from someone else, and it just smelled like VERY strong grain alcohol, it smelled like rubbing alcohol, and he'd dole it out and claim that a few spoonfuls was like having 2 shots at once.

People I knew drank it and said how it was sorta like everclear but stronger and how it's not something that they'd buy and that it made them sick.

i had somme moonshine the other night, i bought it from a friend who stole it from some guy, i traded a pipe for a 26 of it but it wasnt thats strong... fucking asshole kept the good stuff for himself..
