I watched this thing last night about scientists who are trying to, and think they can, eliminate death...

Would you rather live in a world with or without death?

I think if we eliminated death then it seems humans would just overpopulate the planet and use up all our resources faster than we currently are. Death is a part of life...I dont see why someone would want to fuck with that...other than to get paid

^ Other than to live forever. Seems lower quality and higher stress to me. Pointless to literally live your life on the fringes of death when you should just live for a specific amount of time then pass on.

Not to mention, death is something that comes naturally for all of us, just like pain. We have not found a way to fully eliminate pain so Hell, we'd be in pain everyday of our lives. The "older" we'd get, the more pain, but no death. Death, to me, is the ending of pain. Your mind can be the end of suffering.

Don't get me started on the worldwide consequences of such actions.

People just don't want to accept death. Extending life just for the sake of living as long as possible is pointless. The majority of people are probably not even enjoying their lives right now but would want to extend life out of fear of death. And yeah I agree about the overpopulation thing. We're already there ;)

I am terrified of death (more so, fear of the unknown as an agnostic) but would not ever persue a means to live forever. As has already been mentioned, death is very much a part of life and life cannot be sustained without it. There are not enough resources to support an immortal population. The only way this would work is if everyone who participated was sterilized. There is no need to have children if you are going to live forever.

Im all for extending peoples lives as long as they have a decent quality of living. But if this technology is eventually developed only the rich will be able to take advantage of it, so we would have an immortal upper class. That sounds really bad to me.

And as much as the thought of dying scares me, I take comfort in the fact that every person that has ever lived is either dead, or will die someday. Its part of the human experience.

The prospect of living forever is depressing. Part of what makes life so valuable is the limited amount of time you have. The more you have of something the less meaning it carries. Besides, infinity would also get pretty boring, especially toward the end. ;)

i see what you did there max ;)

i'm actually reading a book about infinity right now. i don't think i would enjoy being a part of infinity. i know i wouldn't. there is no way for a human to live forever and stay human.

nope that doesnt sound like fun to me at all. i am pretty sure that i live forever anyways, just not stuck in this body or this planet.

3 things:

people would continue to evolve, you'd be stuck at the same age if you never aged.. you'd eventually become an outcast. forever alone.

with all these natural disasters, it's a matter of when and not if you get trapped somewhere because of an earthquake, hurricane, etc. or maybe even an ice age or whatever the case may be.

also, the older you get the 'faster' your perception of time is as you age (though this bit remains somewhat controversial). imagine being 10,000 years old and all that.

I'd love to live forever.

I don't believe in a continued existence after death.

The majority of people are probably not even enjoying their lives right now but would want to extend life out of fear of death.

I enjoy being alive pretty much every day.

So naturally I don't want my life to end.

Obviously there are some practical issues involved:

if this technology is eventually developed only the rich will be able to take advantage of it, so we would have an immortal upper class. That sounds really bad to me.

people would continue to evolve, you'd be stuck at the same age if you never aged

with all these natural disasters, it's a matter of when and not if

also, the older you get the 'faster' your perception of time is as you age

And even if continued evolution of the 'mortals' doesn't alienate you. The continued social and societal changes surely would. I know grandparents in their 70's and 80's who feel out of touch with the world today. Imagine being in your 140's.

i don't know that i would want to live fore ever in this body. But thats because I believe there may be a spiritual system beyond our current comprehension and this is only one stage of consciousness.

Maybe not.

I've always been a rask taker.

No, because people are lazy bastards. Pretty much everything we do is something that either:

*A famous dead person wanted you to do.
*Someone who will die someday wants you to do.
*Something that is considered obligatory before you die.

People talk all the time about all the books we'd write and places they'd go and things they'd try, but--call me a cynic--I see a world of immortals as one of lotus-eating slobs. This world is vibrant and gorgeous today only because of countless creatures that lived their lives and died (or went extinct) in their own time, to make room for the future.

This, why don't people stop and think about how important death is to new life.
