Hey guys, I'm 18 years old and a senior in High School in San Jose, California.

Umm..ever since 11th grade, I started to ditch school a lot and started drugs and therefore failed all my classes. Starting senior year I was behind 50 credits or something and I tried to make it up but things happened and I'm lagging behind again and lost modivation so failed all classes but Art in the first semester.

Its April right now and im on my 2nd semster and there is no hope of graduating on time since im failing ALL my classes again. My mail goal right now is getting my higjh school deploma or a GED. Since getting the deploma requires enough credits that I dont have cause I'm down like 90 credits now. And I dont want to make all thoes credits up after this school year cause i'll be wasting so much time time to get it all back. So I'm thinking about getting the GED to replace the deploma. Is this a good idea? I dont really know anything about GEDs. And since I havent done any homework and paid attention in class this past 2 years, and I've been doing alot of ecstasy which fucks up your brain and learning and all that, making my credits by taking classes would be difficult for me.

My plan for college and major would be something in psychology probably a social worker or therapist. Thats what I want to do, help people and kids through problems in their life. Currently I'm just waitng for the school year to be over so I can get started doing the GED, this is stupid cauise im just wasting my time, and I cant drop out cause of the gov. and my family's housing program.

I'm just really confused here of what to do and REALLY worried about facing the real world after high school. It all seems so hard for me cause I'm really inexperienced and dont know much about education and college stuff. Please give me some suggestions and advice and help. THANKS

Get your GED.

I was kicked out of highschool and got my GED and no one gives a shit about highschool in the real world so it hasn't mattered either way.

I dropped out and got my GED. Now I am in community college and am doing very well. From what I understand, if you have a strong GPA in community college you have a higher chance of getting into a decent university than if you had a similar GPA in highschool, whether you graduated or not.

^ +1 for all of them. GED and CC will get you to a four year uni, no problem.

you do need to examine your life and your motivation though, dont waste your time or money with uni if your not going to attend class or do well.

Don't fear, a GED is fine. Just apply yourself and do well. Then you can enter a community college and things will get much better from then on. Lay off the drugs for a while though, eh?

You don't even need to start out at a community college if you get your GED. Some schools accept GED's right off the bat. Just try and do some extracurricular acitivies and it should help you get in.

I'm sort of in the same situation as you, but for different reasons. I went through a lot of shit, depression, sickness (mono, and a thyroid problem for a bit), and that all is what started my downfall in highschool.

Get your diploma! I graduated a semester late cause I messed around in high school. It wasn't that bad... and a diploma is much better than a GED.

I would have to disagree and say that that is a waste of time. Just get your GED and go to CC. An AA means 100 times more than a diploma.

Also, if you feel overwhelmed then take some time off. I took a year and a half off and it really helped me organize my priorties. You should soon find out that a life of doing nothing but drugs gets old fast.

^ if you are trying to get into top notch schools, or even decent ones directly from highschool a ged is worthless. some people think cc is a waste of time (its not). the thing is though, if youve no plans on going to college, ged is just fine even without the cc, although ill be honest i tend to think of a HS diploma a bit better than i do a ged. in some cases i think its kind of a cop out. (not necessarily in the OPs though)

GED or diploma, whichever one you end up choosing, my advice is once you do get into community college you actually focus and do well. It will not bode well for your future if you treat that the same as you have high school.

^ damn dude where are you from?

every 4 year uni ive ever looked at wanted either a diploma or a GED and some CC

and i dont think the CC near me would let you in w/o your ged, although you could get it there.

I am from Texas. Students who do not have a GED or a diploma from an accredited high school take something called the Accuplacer test. This may be something unique to Texas. I am not sure what the minimum score needed for entrance is.

I dropped out of high school but later got a diploma doing one of those study at home things. The college would not accept it. Maybe this test is only an option for students who have diplomas that the college won't accept.

I've been getting good grades at the community college. I hope the lack of an acceptable HS diploma won't prevent me from getting into a university.

nah once youve got a few years of CC unis dont give a fuck about HS. they wont even ask for the transcripts i dont think if youve got an Associates.

Stay in school. If you can't or won't go to high school classes, how are you going to do college? You need some discipline, and if you want to become a social worker you better be ready for a whole hell of a lot of studying.

And I'm sorry, but everyone who says a GED is the same as a diploma is full of shit. It really says something about your motivation and your will to succeed. If I'm hiring someone, and one person dropped out of school and the other didn't, who do you think I'm going to hire?

i fucked around all of high school, should have gotten my GED at 16 and started the real world, instead i listened to my parents and am graduating as a super-senior. I don't regret it, but i can't help but think how much more further i could be along if i had suceeded via the GED route.

Do what makes sense for you man.

Exactly. The mindset of "Ooooh high school sucks... I dont attend classes... I dont do well" Well boo fucking hoo... college isn't any easier. And in this day and age... a diploma goes so much further than a GED.

Hell... there are jobs here where you answer phones all day for customer service... and they require a diploma. I'm seeing more and more stores in malls requiring diplomas, or reasons as to why you dont have one. A girl who had a baby and couldn't graduate might get some consideration, but a "poor me high school sucked so I dropped out" attitude gets you no where.

If you dont have the discipline in high school.... I can almost guarantee you won't take to college very well.
